I've done more than read scouting reports on him. I've seen him play. He's big, has excellent handle and
passes well. He passes alot. He effectively runs the pick and roll with his bigs, and he knows who to find the open man. Passes well off the drible and makes a lot of nice strong one armed passes. He has good vision.
He's big.

He isnt a great athelete. Hes not very fast and doesnt get up very high either.
He isnt a good shooter from 3 or mid range. He's solid.
He's not a really good scorer. He often forces shots, looking akward, and his feet aren't set. He drives to the lande and sometimes finishes, but it doesnt look like he can do this in the NBA given his lack of speed and athleticism.

He makes a lot of turnovers with his strong one armed passes.

He is not NBA ready. Anybody thinking hes gonna come in and play right away is mistaken. I don't think he is that good of PG that his other weaknesses don't matter.

He does remind me alot of Andre Miller, in terms of his strengths and weaknesses. KNowing how to run the pick and roll is a major plus, but not being able to shoot and not being real quick is gonna be a problem in today's NBA.

These guards are big and super fast.
Honestly, I'd rather take an athletic PG with less vision and develop him than took a solid PG with good vision and slow feet. I am not impressed with Morris' ability to score.

I'd rather Reggie Jackson or Iman Shumpert 2 big guards, with less PG vsion but way more athleticism and better jumpshots.

David Aldridge does not have him ranked in his top 10.

Honestly (in reference to Reggie J & Iman S) I feel like we already have a pg/sg tweener. Toney Douglas.

Toney Douglas is a tweener at 6-2.
Reggie Jackson is 6-3 with 7 ft wingspan.

Iman Shumpert is 6-5.5 known for his defense, rebounds well, and was #6 in the NCAA in steals per game. He's fast, can get in the lane, and has a decent jumper. He has to develop his PG skills, but he can give us alot of what we need. There are no perfect guards in this draft. Shumpert would be my pick for PG.

We cannot afford to draft a tall and avg speed PG who cannot shoot well. We already tall & slow in Chauncey, and the way the league is going, we'll pay for that kind of mistake. Russell Westbrook, Stephen Curry, Brandon Jennings, Derrick Rose, John Wall, Jeff Teague, et al arent going anywhere.

long and athletic, esp for pgs.

If we draft a PG, it needs to be one who has speed and quickness AND most importantly can penetrate the lane to create shots for himself and others.

I think this was the main thing lacking from this offense after the Melo trade. D'Antoni's offense (and really, every successful NBA offense these days) depends on penetration from the lead guard. Obviously Nash was great at it - and great at making difficult passes in traffic once he reached the paint. Felton was pretty darn good at it. We need to get someone who can run the pick and roll, but also get to the paint repeatedly. Billups has never been this type of PG.

Look at Dallas with Barrea, OKC with Westbrook, Chicago with DRose, Miami uses Bron and Wade to penetrate, Rondo, etc. It's majorly important in the league now. The new rules about handchecking on the perimeter (not really new anymore) make the ability to create offense off penetration SO important in the league.

So - who are the best penetration PGs? Where can we find our Barrea? Or, if we're lucky, more like a Jennings/Rondo/Lowry/Holiday/Brooks type steal at 17.

THere is no point in drafting a PG that cannot pass. We have a solid combo guard in Douglas. We need to draft someone who can actually run a team. I agree that Morris may be slower than you would like, but unless Walsh really believes a guy like Shelby or Jackson can run the team full-time, I would rather draft the guy I know can run the plays and hope that he develops the jumpshot needed to play effectively at this level. Morris is by far the best pure PG in this class and he is probably a better defender than Andre Miller.

Maybe we should just roll with Chauncey next season and follow BRIGGS' plan to draft size next month. At least size isn't something that can be learned or modified, it comes as a package deal. Ideally, we flip Billups' paper for a better PG or we wait (fingers crossed) for CP3/DW in 2012.

I think we need both a center and a penetrating PG. if we can get either one of those things in the draft, it'd be a huge help.

I am hoping Walsh can buy another pick. I would not be opposed to trading Douglas if we could get a high pick (11-19 range) and draft a guy like Shelby (with the hope that at best he turns into a PG and at worst, he turns into a combo guard similar to Douglas). If we can come out of the draft with a solid pg prospect and a defensive-minded center, we should be set for next year.

I agree with this. I think we should use the 17th pick on the best available PG or C. Then purchase picks late 1st round or 2nd round to grab more PF/C type players. I would not use a 2nd round pick on a PG.

I like that idea. I am looking at Indiana and they have enough cap room to trade their pick, 15th overall, for TD straight up. Darren Collison and TD would make a very good backcourt with TD being the spotup 2. They would wreck havoc in the perimeter and with Hibbert patroling the lane they would be tough to score on.

Picking the best pg or center at 17 sounds like a good plan. If Vucevic is available, he's a great choice. If not, I like Morris. His game reminds me of Mark Jackson, although he's probably a little better defensively than Mark was. We're not going to get a Wall or Rose where we're picking. But we do need a young pg who can run the offense and find the open man. Morris will do this.

these "moments of sobriety" are awesome. keep them coming.

i'm intrigued by shumpert.

it's gotta be a BPA selection - we can't go on need, because we have too many needs!

Darius Morris seems like a great idea if he's still there when we pick. I LOVE big PG's and if this kid is there I think Donnie and Mike would love him. A pure PG with size and BB IQ. He's a good shooter and should be able to develop the NBA 3. I also really liked what I heard during his interviews online. The kid seems to be smart and gets it. He's a Landry type and that fits right in with what Mike loves from his players. He should be able to see the floor very well at his size and with targets like STAT and Melo he should be able to be successful here as he learns the NBA game from CB. Reggie Jackson also seems like a decent prospect as well.

I think Darius Morris is more of a pure PG than Mardy Collins - but I think he's also not very quick or athletic.

I feel like we need to find a guard who can penetrate. Reggie Jackson seems like a good fit. Maybe Josh Selby. Maybe Nolan Smith. I don't know enough about Iman Shumpert, honestly. I wouldn't mind taking a flyer on Ben Hansbrough with a second round pick if he's there.

The guy who I feel like might really be special is MarShon Brooks. This kid is all world at creating his own shot - no real guard skills, but he does have the ability to get to the paint and create for himself and others. Not sure he's a fit with this team, but maybe?

I like Darius Morris - he's on my board, but not sure he's the best fit at PG.

Here's MarShon (lighting up Ben Hansbrough for 52 pts)

I read that Darius had the best assist numbers of anyone in the draft. He had an assist rate of 8.8 per 40 mins. He may not be a super athlete, but he's not exactly slow either.
From a physical standpoint, Morris has great size and length for the point guard position at 6'4” with a very impressive frame. Always looking to make things happen with the ball in his hands, Morris is capable of overpowering defenders with his solid first step and extremely aggressive mentality, similar to the way Tyreke Evans did at Memphis a few years back. While he may not possess jet-quickness by NBA standards, his size and strength are major assets on both ends of the floor and give him a huge physical advantage at the point guard position.

Running the point for a young Michigan team, Morris has really stood out with his ability to utilize his size, ball-handling ability, and craftiness to get into the paint and make plays. His ability to finish in the lane and in the midrange area is highlighted by the fact that he's shooting an excellent 56% on 2-pointers so far this season, where he's shown that he's capable of finishing in a variety ways. He's also doing a much better job drawing contact at the rim this season, as he's getting to the line at a much rate than he did as a freshman.

The area where Morris has really stood out and made strides this season has been as a distributor. Aided by the fact that he's asked to handle the ball and create shots for himself and his teammates dozens of times per game, he's shown to have a solid feel for making drive and dish plays, even if there's still plenty of room for improvement. He's clearly embraced his role as the Wolverine's primary ball-handler and playmaker, nearly doubling his assist rate from last season.

Morris is dishing out 8.8 assists per 40 minutes pace adjusted this season, which leads all players in our database.

If you doubt this kids passing ability just look at the incredible passes he makes in this video

Dude looks like he could be a good BACKUP. Guy isnt fast and has no jumper apparently. I see NBA guards eating his lunch.

I'd waste a pick on Jeremy Tyler before Darius Morris.

Did you see the passes he made starting at abiout 2:20 of the video? Man that kid has the kind of passing ability you want to see with a team having STAT and Melo. He doesn't have to be super quick in order to be a great PG. Big PG's can look slower than the are cuz they have a longer gate. Also he shot 49% and has a high assist rate. He'll develop his 3pt shot playing for MDA. He's fast enough and big enough to be effective in the NBA. COURT VISION is more important than raw speed.
