Nene May Opt Out Of Contract This Summer
May 03, 2011 10:26 AM EDT

Nene said Monday he is strongly considering opting out of the final season of his six-year, $60 million contract, which would pay him $12 million, and testing the free-agent market.

After nine seasons in the NBA, Nene has full control of his future and it could take hard work for the Nuggets to make him happy enough to return.

"I've been here for nine years," said Nene, 28. "If that doesn't work how you want it, you need to sit down and evaluate everything and see what you can do."
The overarching issues in this situation are his level of happiness with the Nuggets and, ultimately, his value on the open market.

Players similar to him — Utah's Al Jefferson, Chicago's Carlos Boozer and Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge — will make $11 million to $14 million next season.

Can we trade Chauncey and filler for Felton/Nene?

He is pretty much exactly what the Knicks need. I have no clue how we could get him though since we don't have the cash moneys. I don't think Denver would trade him and Felton for basically Billups though.. unless they really want an expiring contract? But that kinda doesn't make sense

He's going to be waaaay over priced. We have to use whatever room we have very efficiently.

I'd explore that. Not sure how much filler we could provide that they didn't already steal from us, but maybe Billups, TD and Turiaf gets us there. Chauncey has a huge expiring and Nene may simply walk. But no way I think we get him as FA, we need a PG first and foremost.

I think I'd prefer to talk to NO about Okafor and taking his $40M off their hands for the next 3 years. Whether it's part of a larger CP3 deal or not.

Exactly the kind of player you cannot acquire when you already have $50M tied up in 3 players.

I like him, but you also have to consider that he is not the defensive presence you need when your two forwards are defensively challenged, and your PG is unable to stop the quicker PGs from penetrating.

I think Nazr would be a great pick up. Do you think D'Antoni plays him any regular minutes? Also, do you think a big like Nazr takes a chance signing to play for a coach like D'Antoni?

Nene would be great but it seems like Dalembert can solve more problems at a cheaper price. Of course he's not as good but is a better rebounder and shot blocker by a wide margin and may be able to be had for the mid level if he wants to come to a good situation where he can be the primary defensive enforcer.

Sure ..sure.. we have Melo and Billups add Nene and we look just like Denver re-united not that Stat isn't way better than Martin of course. Not hearing how Andrew's game stacks up though

I would pass on Nene, he isn't the type of center we need and there is a reason why those similar players make more..........

I really like Nene A LOT but if we surround Carmelo with the players he had in Denver, do you think the outcome will be any different?

We need to get players better than Nene, for a cheaper price to even think about contending for a championship. That means we can't pay market value for any remaining players.

Unless the CBA brings something radically different (like what MLB has, which is no real cap).

Rose is not the answer.

We need a player who does not need the ball to be effective. A big that can run the floor, has a decent mid range shot, weak side defender, rebounder and strong outlet passer.

Nene has many fine qualities as a player but not in what I think we need.

In another thread AND a day late I was thinking the same thing. He should have been a Knick all of these yeras anyway, but Dolan would have packaged him the trade for Melo were he here. He'd be just about a perfect fit with Melo and Amare. Felton at the point and who cares who's at the two, but Fields would fit perfectly there. So the Knicks would be all set for a KILLER starting five.

All sorts of true. It's limiting options like that make me unhappy about the too quick and full re-upping of Billups. I'm on board with most of Donnie's decisions, but I think he should have let Lee walk and bought out Billups and signed his for a lesser amount. But whadya gunna do?

SammyD is prolly a better fit, I'm, fiancially and skill wise. Ideally I think I would like to see Dally, KMart, and try to reacquire felton.
