Walsh just made a statement that Knicks are keeping Chauncey, saying he, Amar'e and Carmelo form a great nucleus.

This was a no-brainer, as the cap space for next season without Chauncey just wasn't enough to do anything special. That was bottom line.

Seems like it was the only logical choice with so much cap uncertainty with the lockout.

Choosing between Chauncey and a POSSIBLE $8M in cap space pretty much is a no-brainer. Now we just need to hire the guy who keeps Steve Nash and Grant Hill healthy all season.

Knicks will pick up option on Chauncey Billups; guard to return next season

BY Frank Isola

The Knicks are bringing back Chauncey Billups.

The Daily News has learned that the Knicks agreed Wednesday to pick up the one-year, $14.2 million option on the veteran point guard's deal. An official announcement is expected to be made sometime Wednesday afternoon.

"We have made a decision to keep Chauncey Billups for the upcoming 2011-12 season," Knicks team president Donnie Walsh said in a statement. "Chauncey, Amar'e and Carmelo are a great nucleus, as we continue to look to improve our team going into the off-season. Chauncey is an extremely talented and experienced point guard - we are very happy to have him back."

Billups' contract called for the Knicks to decide on his future within five days of the conclusion of their season. The team had until Friday to either pick up his option of buy him out for $4 million.

Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire both lobbied to bring back Billups, the 2004 NBA Finals MVP who came to New York from Denver in the Anthony deal.

Billups injured his left knee in Game 1 of the Knicks' playoff series against the Boston Celtics and missed the final three games of the first-round sweep.

no brainer and no downside. Knicks will use his contract hoping like hell some team has a firesale and a couple usually do. Package him with a couple other pieces and hopefully you get a long term 3rd piece to make the Melo/Amare tandem a real monster to deal with. I dont know what bigman will be available regardless this is the best course of action.

As for Walsh staying? I dont see how this means anything. Walsh will work and do his job until the day he leaves. He's a true pro in every sense of the word. I hope he stays but do you see that after what happened with the Melo trade? I doubt it... man I hope I'm wrong

Agree with both points.

Any word on Kelenna Azubuike's health? Couldn't hurt to invite him to camp.

Billups, though, also said he plans to play 5 pounds lighter next season at 210 to deal with the demands of Mike D’Antoni’s offense.

...I like that dude's a real pro. Very happy to have him back...much easier to find a b/u PG

BTW...it looks like we are officially over the cap next season assuming Turiaf exercises his option

Time for Donny to work his magic again....

Walsh is gonna do his thing. This is where he comes in handy. Dolan can't do the kind of work that Walsh can in finding good value with few resources. Dolan was OK doing a big move like Melo and just overpaying, but he knows that the small detailed types of moves are way out of his league. He needs Walsh now. This is what Walsh loves to do. I don't think he enjoys those big deals as much as he does drafting guys like Fields and finding guys like Shawne and Timo etc. He can get down to doing what he loves and i'm optimistic about what he can accomplish. We know he's gonna be patient and calculating with plan A, B & C ready to go.

probably just me but seems strange that we resign him today (when we had till Friday), which turns out to be the same days its reported that Paul has demanded a trade.

Can't see us having the assets to pull this off but we do have (I believe) 3 draft picks. 1 first rounder and 2 second round Picks.

Picks are always valuable to a cost cutting organization. Just don't think I young talent would be sufficient filler to satisfy them.

the fact that you can't even have an unrelated thread without some tool here bringing him up make me think that rational minds are few and far between. Bunch of emotionally weak, angst riddled people. I mean, how many times can you argue the same shyt

Chris Paul demands a trade in the middle of a playoff series....I think you are the only one who fell for that one.

Chris Paul hasn't demnanded a trade. Why would he even do that while he's still playing right now?

Howard Beck from the NYTimes with a joke trade that sounds ideal:

Now that Billups is locked in, maybe Knicks can trade him to Denver for Felton and Chandler. #kidding #butonlyalittle

Billups and TD for Felton, Chandler and Moz. We can find our backup PG in the draft or Carter can do it for one more season.

Billups and pick 17 for Felton, Mozgov and Chandler.

Suddenly, we have a full team again.
