Getting a new coach does not solve anything unless there are better options, and there aren't. Finding a nice assistant who knows defense would benefit though. I think we have many different options and the one you proposed is a decent idea. Going hard after Nash is a real option this summer. Also, i think going after Sessions and Varejao is another option. I think both options mean we trade Billups, our draft pick, Douglas (or Fields, but hopefully not) and cash. Which is a better option?

I'd buy some extra draft picks and try to bring in some guys like Reggie Jackson, Malcolm Lee, Kenneth Faried, and Tu Holloway. Get some young guys that are hungry and play with a lot of energy. Then I'd go after some tough, defensive minded vets like Chuck Hayes, Reggie Evans and Jeff Foster. Just get me a bunch of guys that are cheap and willing to play hard. We'd be younger and more athletic, but still have the flexibility to go after the big fish for 2012.

I think there are better options. I also think that you have to look at guys like Monty Williams and Frank Vogel and look what they have done this year. Maybe there is an assistant out there that will step up and be successful. Maybe there is a d-league uy that could blow up in the NBA. Look at some of the playoff coaches this year, Collins, Williams, and Vogel. They all have shown a lot this year and I don't think anyone expected them to have the success that they all have had. The Knicks don't win anything with D'Antoni. He has been blessed by Walsh's loyalty, a fan base that has lost for so long that mediocrity seems good, and a ton of excuses. It is time to move on in my opinion.

I am beginning to think that D'Antoni is as good as his point guard. Nash made coach. If we get CP3 game on for D'Antoni. But if not he ain't the guy with Amare or Carmelo. His offense is very point guard driven. Chauncey is long in the tooth.
We could be the Dallas Mavs of the East.

I don't know why Ewing doesn't get more love as a potential successor to MDA.

The meltdown in Orlando doesn't help, but I think he is a guy that would be defensive minded, demand energy out of his players and be ok with a traditional center.

Offense with Amare and Carmelo isn't a problem.

Getting stops, and grabbing boards is, and I think Ewing would be the kind of coach to fix these.

And I agree about buying as many picks as we can- and getting some hungry role players in.

who are the FA PGs this year? I'm not sure Ford or sessions are what we really need. Our best option unfortunately may be to have Billups back at a reduced price.

Might want to dump Billups and look to fill other positions like Center which is a major need as I feel Billups is old and injury prone now. Best would be to pick up a center like Marc Gasol, Deandre Jordon or Oden or some other Big man that can stabilize the front court. Draft a pg of the future and have a Ford come in and run the point until the drafted PG is ready to take over. Make no mistake the Knicks were hurt badly by lack of presence in the middle and it doesn't help to have an injury prone PG at the helm.

I think it goes without saying the Knicks are going to pick up Walker at under $1MM and Williams will be back. Jordan is the guy I really want and I think can be had with the Clippers locked into Kaman. If not Gray and Nazr are cheap options that can fill a needs. I would like to see Grant Hill here as well. Landry is playing his way into a big contrac but his toughness is something we really need.

I think the below list is what Walsh is going to go after. Billups needs to be bought out in order to make this team playoff worthy. Hopefully Ronny opts out and free up some additional cap room.

Point Guard
T.J. Ford, Indiana Pacers - $8.5 million – Unrestricted

SG
Jason Richardson, Orlando Magic - $14.4 million - Unrestricted
Michael Redd, Milwaukee Bucks - $18.3 million - Unrestricted (sign for 1MM veteran minimum)
Delonte West, Boston Celtics - $1.1 million – Unrestricted
Grant Hill, Phoenix Suns - $3.2 million - Unrestricted

SF
Earl Clark, Orlando Magic - $1.9 million – Unrestricted (Could be the value play longterm to get him on the cheap)
Shawne Williams, New York Knicks - $0.9 million – Unrestricted

PF
Carl Landry, New Orleans Hornets - $3.0 million - Unrestricted
Glen Davis, Boston Celtics – $3.3 million – Unrestricted
Kris Humphries, New Jersey Nets - $3.2 million – Unrestricted
Reggie Evans, Toronto Raptors - $5.1 million – Unrestricted

Center
Tyson Chandler, Dallas Mavericks - $12.6 million – Unrestricted
Joel Przybilla, Charlotte Bobcats - $7.4 million – Unrestricted
Samuel Dalembert, Sacramento Kings – $13.4 million - Unrestricted
Greg Oden, Portland Trail Blazers - $6.8 million – Restricted ($8.8 million Qualifying Offer)
Jeff Foster, Indiana Pacers - $6.7 million - Unrestricted
Nazr Mohammed, Charlotte Bobcats - $6.9 million – Unrestricted
DeAndre Jordan, L.A. Clippers - $0.9 million – Unrestricted*
Aaron Gray, New Orleans Hornets - $0.9 million – Player Option ($0.9 million)

The big question: does the GM sign any new players beyond a 1 year deal? Or hold off for a better FA pool?

My guess is that a majority of the Player Option guys will opt-in because of potential shortened season.

so please... aside from rarely being healthy do tell what Kaman brings that OK4 does not. And you want defense but our backcourt is smaller than most high school teams. OK

Thibs was top duputy dog and given a lot of cred toward building bostons defense. And look at the players he had to work with.

Orlando has Dwight.

Im good with bringing Dwight and ewing can tag along if that what it takes.

Ewing can't bring what he bought as a player. He is not playing!

I'm not against OK4 my only concern with OK4 is his true lack of height. With Amare and OK4 you field an undersized lineup. As for Kaman he brings the all important expiring contract just in case it doesn't work out he is 7' tall you can't teach size.

i like Jrich... good 3 point shooter looks like a tough guy... lets see how much will he command, maybe oralando wants to try arenas at the 2 no way will they pay him max money to be a 6th man

Since he is coming of a big contract maybe we can get him for the MLE for 2 years?

I think JRich is good value for a team for the MLE... but perhaps just not in NY.

1) Is JRich just gonna sign for the MLE? I guess there is an underlying assumption that ORL doesn't want him back? Or he can't get more $ someplace else? Dallas needs a SG.
2) Is JRich at $6+m better than developing Fields for another year and waiting to spend FA money on a long term PG or C?

am i the only one who thinks Shane Battier would be a nice fit? he can shoot, defend, he's a vet, battle-tested, seems to always be on winning teams... so he's older. i don't think that's really a concern for his type of game.

im with you on this. here's the thing - i dont believe we solve either problem this coming year (longterm PG or C) b/c the pool to pick from is pretty weak if you ask me. we all know the big prizes for what we need are 2 yrs out still (dhoward & cp3 or deron) so i believe we must go through another transition year before we get to where we wanna be. so what can we fix now? easy - defensive intensity. get some veteran players that will help get this team to being more defensive minded (a def asst coach would help also). i think dantoni learned a valuable lesson in this year's playoffs - offense dont win games, defense does. the fact that he took a 180 on his SSOL for the playoffs says something to me. so, if he adjusts in the beginning of next year and you see a more defensive minded philosophy, i'm cool witha that. if not, he goes.

for those of us that are realistic in terms of the knicks development, we know that we are still 2 yrs out from making any type of meaningful run to the finals, assuming we get dhoward and cp3/deron). this is why keeping walsh is so important. he will madk smart moves to get us the fillers we need to be competitive and remain cap friendly'ish until its all sorted out before we add the final pieces for the 2012-2013 season.

so, if i were donnie, how would i get us there?

- i would keep melo, amare, but everyone else i would use to make my club better.
- i would keep fields for another year to see if he continues to devleop.
- i would try to pick up shane battier (no evil, you are not the only one who thinks he would be great on this team).
- i would try to land oden on a much reduced contract or pick him up as a one year rental. if he gets hurt, i am in no worse shape than i was before him. or, here's where you can get a deandre jordan or whatever.
- i would try to rid us of chauncey's contract for next year b/c the guy just does not want to be here. do not pick up his option and buy him out for a shade uner $4M then move on.
- if a guy like nash becomes available for cheap or mid season rental, i would do that. i would not commit real money to steve nash b/c it reduces my chances for going after cp3/deron hard when they come up on the block.
- last but not least, i do everything possible to make NY an attractive landing area for dhoward. this guy will not stay in orlando, ESPECIALLY if the hawks continue to tear the magic apart and out of the playoffs this year. i do not believe howard will go to LA as kobe is old and phil jax aint coming back. he would be worse off than he is today in orlando.

so, in 2 yrs, i go to war with:

PG: cp3/deron - we will get one of them.

that squasd wins a championship. fill in the bench as needed. hopefully fileds will be around to round out my bench as a 6th man. that is a role i see him built for. he is not a starter.

LASTLY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY - - - I WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING THAT WOULD JEOPORDIZE ME GETTING THE AFOREMENTIONED STARTING 5 ON MY ROSTER. no starphucking, no signing anymore bad contracts, etc.

i'm sure that the salary cap and other things come into play, but i am more sure that if donnie does the right things, which he will most likely do, then we will have this line-up. only x factor is howard. but for some reason, i see him out of orlando and quick.
