Foster's an unrestricted free agent. Not a glamour free agent by any means but the guy's 6'11, can guard other team's Centers, is great on the offensive glass, and as seen in the clip below, isn't afraid to use his body and play physical.

If we had a guy like that last game, Rondo would've done a lot less damage. All it takes is one play where a big hits a driving guard for the guard to think twice next time.

He'd be an under-the-radar acquisition that could help immensely. Him and Turiaf splitting time at C would be solid.

Screw the JR Smith types. if we add size, defensive minded players, and toughness, this team will be a LOT tougher to beat next year.

Foster has a lot to offer that we need. He's no marquis name, but he plays hard, bodies up big dudes, and is not a liability on offense. But I wouldn't blow my wd on him unless we strike out on bigger trades.

Jeff Foster kills us when we play him because we have no inside presence- but I don't know if he stays healthy and brings it every night in a way that would satisfy Knick fans and make him a true enforcer next to Amear
If you are still following the team and reading sites like this, there is nothing, short of your own demise, that is going to throw you off this train.

obviously all of this depends on where the salary cap comes in after the CBA. this year's cap was at $58 million. let's just pretend that the NBA gets shorter contracts from the players and as a concession raises the cap a bit (less long term security, but players get more up front). if the cap is at $60 million next year (with the same MLE rules and vet minimums), here is what the knicks are looking at:

$46 mil committed: melo, stat, turiaf, douglas, fields, billy W (team option but they'll bring him back at $800K), balkman, and rautins.

the knicks are basically presented with two options:

A) bring back billups for one year at $14 million which puts them at the $60 million cap. they then would have 9 guys under contract (including balkman and rautins who presumably won't be rotation players) and would have to fill in the rest with their first rounder, a MLE guy, and vet minimums.
B) renounce billups. this gives you $14 million in wiggle room to sign a handful of guys to try to get a team with more depth.

i think you've gotta go avenue B and renounce Chauncey. let him test the market and try to bring him back on like a 1 yr $5 mil deal. i don't know who is gonna give this guy more money given his injuries the last few years. i do think he brings a lot to the table but not at $14 mil. that leaves $9 mil to make a move.

would the cavs deal varejao for turiaf's expiring and our first rounder? he's on the books for $7.7 million. i'd even consider throwing in fields if they were interested. i thought fields would be the perfect glue guy for this team but his complete meltdown has been alarming.

if not, i'd love to scoop up 2-4 guys in the jeff foster category. cheap vets who know their role and fill out our roster. we can't be playing 7 guys for half the season next year.

Foster is a good idea. We definitely need a guy of his caliber.

Right now my list would be:

Anderson Varejao
Robin Lopez (Phoenix has Frye and Gortat under contract for a lot of years)
Jeff Foster
Chris Kaman (assuming LAC is going to re-up Deandre Jordan)
Brendan Haywood (assuming Dallas commits to Tyson Chandler)

unfortunately Foster has played LESS games than Turiaf over the past couple of years.

Maybe Turiaf and Foster could split Turiafs $4.3M and call it even for the amount of games they both would play and be injured.

^ i agree with Vmart, not sure though of his contract, but since the clippers are going to match anything for deandre jordan( OVERPAY) why not snatch him up, he can finish around the rim... rebound the ball and block shots. Im not sure though of his man defense i havent seen a bunch of clipper games. Dont Judge his defense with blocks as STAT averages around 1.6 blocks a game and sucks with Man D

Kaman on the books for $12M next year. Not going anywhere, at least not to the Knicks.

I'd go after Shane Battier and Chuck Hayes.

They traded for Mo Williams last year and like Eric Bledsoe for their PG tandem. Also, why would they GIVE away a decent C?

to be able to afford deandre.

trade them billups and turiaf for kaman and bledsoe.

they get billups to help them make a playoffs run, knicks get a center to anchor the team and a young PG who can penetrate a little. then maybe try to add luke ridnour somehow.

adding kaman helps immeasurably for next season, and doesn't mess with the 2012 cap room plan too much.

I guess I understand that LAC is the laughing stock of all teams, but I think they would even laugh at those trades.
