In the last game the Knicks played in Philly, back in January before the trade, they made a furious come back and were down 2 in the final seconds. Gallo passed up a slightly contested three and passed to Shawne Williams, who passed up an open three and drove to the hoop and hit the side of the backboard.

Last night, Melo, guarded by Iggy, drains a huge three to seal the game.

It's a small difference and we surely lost some things in the trade - but moments like last night show what this team was lacking.

Of course we still need a center (but hey the three-headed monster of Shelden/Ronny/Jared had 11 boards in 32min last night!) and some other parts.

But the Knicks got a very big piece that is hard to get. Melo is playing at an MVP level these last five games or so.

THat pretty much sums up why you trade for Melo. If Walsh can go find another Mosgov somewhere this summer, we will be set.

Melo is a finisher.. there is no doubt about it. I liked a lot of the guys we gave up and we gave up too many of them but life goes on.

Its all about next year and if Walsh stays and how he goes about filling the roster and who he brings in etc.

I mean we can sign Reggie Evans with the MLE and draft a 4 year college player who can step in and be a role player like Fields, Douglas, etc and so long as Melo/Amare stay healthy we would probably finish 4th or 5th in the conference.

Been there, done that... since we trade every worthy piece of home grown talent over the last 2 years it would be nice to see something a little better than that.

Man I just hope Walsh stays and we get some nice chips in here

agree fishmike. LOL remember arguging about gallo or wil? now its water under the bridge, melo is $$$.

jajuan johnson from purdue could fit in here (if MDA is going to be the coach). he's a versatile 3/4 that's 6'10.

love the reggie evans. guy's a tough tough rebounder and defender. undersized but we need toughness as much as we do size.

melo is a closer. best in the game in the clutch.

Let's slow down a second here...Kobe is still better than Melo at closing out but Melo is certainly clutch, no doubt about that.

It's debatable but the fact that it is debatable makes me

i think the knicks will be fighting the bulls and heat next year for a top three seed. celtics are getting older and the magic have too many long-term deals and a weird makeup. and the hawks don't scare me.

this team with a training camp under it will be a different beast.

of course, that includes picking up at least one big guy this summer. hopefully two.

I think Kobe used to be the best closer but someone posted some numbers not that long ago and it showed that Melo was #1. Sorry I don't have the numbers handy. I could be wrong but the poster laid out the numbers and Melo had quite a bit more late game winning shots (if that is what you mean). edit - Melo has a better %, Kobe by far has taken more game ending shots but made % wise less of them than Melo.

I found this:

you MUST have depth and quality depth to win in this league. Thats where the trade hurts... that kind of depth takes a few years to aquire and quite a bit of skill (from the GM).

This is why I keep harping on Walsh.

Reggie Evans is a terrific rebounder but he's smallish and does not give offwer the defensive paint presence we desperately need. More inclined to buy a draf pick or two and go after a few bigs, Benson and Faried. Jujuan Johnson is a good call, Crzy...

Realistically though - Walsh built up the depth of the team that started the year in ONE off-season. Sure, he had MAX cap room. BUT, remember how people were saying the Knicks roster was a lame collection of Gallo, Wilson, Toney and nothing else?

Walsh went out and added Amar'e, Felton, Mozgov, Fields, Shawne Williams, Turiaf, AR and Azubuike in the off-season. That's pretty impressive... but it was only one off-season - and an off-season WITHOUT a first round pick.

They have a first round pick this summer and they can maybe buy another one. Not sure what the second round pick situation is, but we also have Jerome Jordan stashed overseas, who I really liked.

Bring Jerome Jordan and at least one quality draft pick and maybe one smart signing for low money on to this roster and it's deep enough to win 55 games, easy... with a full training camp.

I think Walsh got really lucky with Fields and Williams. There always seems to be a Fields type player in the second round but the Knicks don't usually get him. I was sure Williams troubled past, youth and potential character issues would clash with the coach but he has been a phenomenal find. Even Moz is not a typical acquisition by any means. Walsh hit a bigtime home run this offseason with his smaller moves as well as his big ones. I don't think you can expect that every year.
