Jazz tried to deal Williams to Knicks

09:39 AM ET 04.02 | The Utah Jazz had a possible deal in place to send guard Deron Williams to the New York Knicks in a multi-player trade if the Carmelo Anthony deal didn't go through, a source told Yahoo! Sports. After Anthony was dealt to New York, Williams was traded from Utah to the Nets on Feb. 24.

Kind of old news - they reported right after the deadline that Utah planned to shop Deron to the loser of the Melo sweepstakes.

If the team is set to keep D'Antoni aboard, then Deron could have been the perfect piece to run his system. I'm on the pro-Melo trade side of the fence though. Definitely disappointed with that 10 game stretch, but been thrilled with Melo since he took his talents to Broadway. Just keeping my fingers crossed that Donnie will stick around to build a team around our stars.

Either way, I'm done with rumors for this season. We have a whole year to be barraged with Chris Paul rumors ahead of us.

and the even less plausible Dwight Howard scenario. Can't wait.

Unless Utah just did not like our package, I would have to think that they talked to us about Deron. I mean NJ signed him the next day. YOu don't pull a trade like together in a day, so it is likely Utah was shopping him around. If that is the case, I think we should have gotten Williams, especially if it meant we could keep Timmy M.

If legit, a no brainer. We keep Gallo, Mosguv and Chandler, and get our franchise PG.

I love Fields, but Gallo is the better prospect, despite the delusions some of you seem to be living under these days.

Williams makes his teammates look better... Anthony usually just makes himself look better.

Hope it is not true, to be honest... too disappointing if it is.

LOL, there is no chance that was the deal. I would take it in a heartbeat as would have Walsh.

It is interesting to think that we might have been offered Williams, but I don't buy it. Walsh said after that he didn't know, then again, Walsh said that it was his decision to give up the farm and not the owners.

D williams was probably the better fit, but Melo is the better player regardless of what anyone says and adding Billups to the mix makes it a no-brainer. Billups may not be a great player here for the future, but he is an asset no matter how we use him. If you want to win a championship, Melo is a better fit than Williams. On top of all of this, i highly doubt this rumor has any truth to it.

how do you qualify as Melo being better than DWilliams?
how is Billups an asset?

Deron is just a notch or 2 ahead of Melo but he is better.

He's obviously seen a scientific study about the issue or perhaps played it out on some video game.

Of course it might just be some form of denial.

The problem for you is that you just don't compare Anthony/Billups to D. Williams- it would be Anthony/Billups compared to D. Williams + Gallo, Chandler and Mosguv (who would still be on the team),and the subtraction of Fields. If you want to chop off Billups and Chandler next year for cap reasons- fine- then you're comparing Anthony to Williams, Gallo and Mosguv (while also taking into consideration the loss of Fields). The Knicks would have been better set for the future if they had made the Utah trade, IMO, and Amare would have had the perfect partner at PG.
