The Miami Heat are progressing toward signing center Eddy Curry(notes) for the playoffs, front office sources told Yahoo! Sports.

After Heat president Pat Riley watched Curry work out in Chicago in recent days, he’s made plans to bring the 7-footer to Miami early next week for another workout and a medical physical with the ultimate objective to sign him, sources said.

More From Adrian WojnarowskiLeBron tones down act of NBA's villain Mar 29, 2011 Hornets' West out for season with ACL tear Mar 25, 2011 Curry’s weight and personal problems have derailed what had been a productive career, and yet Riley has been hopeful Curry could somehow give the Heat a limited inside presence in the postseason. It is believed Curry still weighs more than 350 pounds.

One league source listed the probability of Miami signing Curry at “better than 50-50.” The Heat would need to cut a player for the playoffs, with rookie Dexter Pittman(notes) as a likely candidate to be waived.

After the Minnesota Timberwolves bought out Curry’s contract in February following the three-way Carmelo Anthony(notes) trade with the New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets, Curry started to work again with trainer Tim Grover in Chicago. It’s unclear how much weight Curry lost, but NBA executives say he hovered around 375 pounds when he arrived in Chicago several weeks ago.

Curry has played a total of 10 games in the past three seasons – including three in 2009-10 and seven in 2008-09 – for the Knicks. New York never activated him this season. In his best season, Curry averaged 19.5 points and 7.1 rebounds for the Knicks in 2006-07.

I'm not a doctor, but is that kind of size, lack of conditioning, plus playoff intensity basketball a good combination for a guy with a suspect heart?

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but that was the plan since LBJ pretended to work out with Curry since last summer. No good will come of it, but expect Curry to be a roster member of the Heat next year , for sure.

I think Curry's heart problem was diet pill related. I don't know if that impacts him long term or not. I can't see him playing in the playoffs but he did appear to be in great shape last year when Walsh made him work out.

This is all good. Curry will waste a roster spot on the heat. He will play 3 minutes in one game, pull a hamstring and get sidelined for te rest of teh year. Then he will ocus on his real job - decimating big macs. And the heat will be paying for it. SAWEET!
TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

Even if so, should we expect it to be any less problematic as he now tries to drop 75 lbs in a few short weeks?

After all the attempts to get him to playing shape I've just got to conclude that he is predisposed to be a big fat guy. I think as he gets older and his metabolism slows its not going to be a good combination.

Agreed; I hope he lives a long, healthy life but I wouldn't bet on it.

I would love for this to happen. And I would love to hear Pat Riley's press conference where he explains what led to him bitch slapping Curry after an important playoff game

I loved all the reports that came out when he was working with Wes and some trainer up in Detroit. How he supposedly lost 40lbs from the end of the previous season playing weight that year and they never told us where his playing weight was, at season's end. Then the trainer essentially telling D'Antoni to go to hell Curry will never get down to 300lbs and 315lbs was already asking enough. What about the season he showed up to camp supposedly having lost weight.... once again no confirmation but mentioned it was believed he weighed close to 285lbs. Reporters wanted him to discuss his weight but he and no one at MSG could be definitive on the Topic.

LOL no scales at MSG..... he always came into the new season having lost weight although his natural listed weight is 285lbs.

This report about him hovering around 375lbs is comical. Curry's weight is one of the greatest American Mysteries of all time

After the heat sign Curry, they should bring in Isiah to coach him. Isiah knows how to get through to Curry, and will help him to finally reach his potential.

Isiah coaching the Heat would be awesome!
If you are still following the team and reading sites like this, there is nothing, short of your own demise, that is going to throw you off this train.

I don't think his joints are going to be able to handle the impact of NBA basketball a that weight. He's not shown any ability to keep the weight off or his conditioning on for any length of time. Hope he doesn't hurt himself.

Pat Reily is probably exactly what Curry needs. He is either going to finally shape up (figuratively and literally) or he is going to follow the path of Oliver Miller and eat himself out of the league before he is even 30 years old.
