pre trade they were 29-26, why would you only look at a 20 game snap shot when a fuller, more accurate picture is out there?
The Knicks started 3-8.
They then win 5 in a row, drop 1 game, then win another 8 games in a row - 13-1 run. (16-9)
After the 13-1 run they play .500 basketball at 6-6 from December 15th through January 11th. (22-15)
After the 6-6 run they go on to lose 6 games in a row from January 12th through January 22nd. (22-21)
They then go 6-5 up to the trade. (28-26)
The trade deadline was February 24th. Melo to the Knicks was being rumored as far back as October. It was a saga Anthony's going to the Nets, no he's not,
he wants to go to the Knicks, the Knicks aren't going to give up the farm, Lakers? Bulls? Mavs? blah blah blah up until February 6th when the Nugs, Knicks and Wolves started talking. Talks die, Anthon'y going to the Nets again, blah, blah, blah. Trade goes down on Feberuary 21st and Melo plays hist first game as a Knick against
the Bucks on February 23rd.
From February 6th up until the trade itself went down they were 3-2. For the month of February up until the trade they were 3-4. 10-12 for the month of Janaury through the trade. Throw in December's 8-5 and from December through the trade they were 18-17.
What is the accurate picture? Aside from a crappy start and a sick hot run we were a .500 team. 8-12 since the trade sucks but there's no way of
really knowing what games would have been won or lost had the previous team stayed together. It would be nothing more than speculation. We had holes before the trade and have holes after the trade. Looking at contracts, cap space (without knowing what the cap is going to be), what the Knicks are going to do with Billups, who we will sign to plug the holes and who were getting in the draft is all in the future. (Although fun to discuss.)
What am I getting at here? I think people (myself included) grew attached to Felton for his warrior mentaility and toughness, Mozgov's potential and the enjoyment of watching Gallo and Chandler get a little bit better each year. We've suffered through 9 years of crap and a team two games over .500 got us all excited about the Knicks again. 8-12 since the trade has many of you thinking that the team was much better than it really was when in reality we have a team that is currently slightly worse than the team we used to have, an inconsistant, streaky .500 team.
