Walsh admits Knicks 'have a lot of work to do'By MARC BERMAN

Last Updated: 12:06 PM, March 28, 2011

Posted: 1:56 AM, March 28, 2011

Knicks president Donnie Walsh, responding to the Knicks' epic collapse since The Trade, told The Post yesterday the club's travails have confirmed to him how flawed his roster still is, and how badly the team needs to add big men in the future.

Since the trade for Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups five weeks ago, the Knicks are 7-12, riding a six-game losing streak and are 1-9 in their last 10 heading into tonight's Garden game against the Magic.

No, a training camp is not going to fix all that ails these Knicks.

"We have a lot of work to do," said Walsh, who does not have a guaranteed contract for next season.

"There was work to do before. There's work to do now. We were missing pieces before the trade. We're still missing the same pieces."

The Knicks still have not locked up a playoff berth with nine games to go. The magic number is five.

The most alarming part is not Anthony's adjustment but that Amar'e Stoudemire is hitting the wall from the season's long grind.

The trade has not made it easier for Stoudemire at all -- which Walsh acknowledged yesterday in a damning admission.

"What I see is I still got to get players to put around him to help him," Walsh said.

"He can do what he can do great, but we've asked him to do what's beyond him. I know what I have to add to this team. We need bigger people on the team. We need more of them."

Indeed, Stoudemire is a 6-foot-10 finesse scoring power forward who's a poor rebounder for his size, and not a savvy interior defender.

He's done an admirable job blocking shots this season, but all the toll of being the Knicks' paint enforcer has zapped him.

Magic center Dwight Howard, as he did last week in an overpowering 34-point domination, should again own the Garden paint tonight.

Walsh said the collapse is not on coach Mike

D'Antoni.

"I think it's very little [on him]," Walsh said. "It's very difficult to put these pieces back together in a short time. That's why it's more my responsibility. That's why I rarely trade in the middle of the season, because it's a big adjustment. But I made it because it's better for the franchise long term.

"Though it's a future trade, I realized it would be a major disruption, and it's hard to get back to where it was. I liked the team we had before. But I didn't think we were going to win the championship."

Stoudemire's fade and Billups looking more 44 than 34 is cause for alarm for these final nine games. If Charlotte or Milwaukee gets hot, the Knicks' playoff chances could be imperiled.

Walsh's contract is not guaranteed, but owner James Dolan needs his president more than ever. Dolan can exercise the option by April 30 or cut a new deal by June 30.

Walsh joked he would have been pilloried had he not made the Melo deal. But he didn't figure the Knicks would fall to losing clubs such as Milwaukee twice, Indiana twice, Charlotte and Detroit.

"I didn't expect this, nobody did," Walsh said.

"We haven't played well. We're definitely struggling as a team. Those teams have been together all year, and they're trying to make the playoffs. We're starting from scratch, on offense and defense. You can throw the records out."

He did this at Indiana. He never held Bird accountable for anything publicly. This is his biggest weakness as he doesn't hold those who work close to his bosom under any real measure of performing and meeting a standard. He does hold himself accountable, which I guess evens things out.

He essentially bids his time contractually... either re-upping or bouncing. If this is how things are going to be I don't want his contract renewed. He'll let us bottom out taking blame instead of stopping the bleeding and heading off future trouble.

He's made 3 trades every year around the deadline since he's been here. Is he saying he isn't going to make a trade next year no matter what? It's kind of sad when he's resorting to using excuses himself.

How do you know what is being said off the record, privately between Walsh & MDA?

I mean, based on last year when Walsh accompanied the team on one road trip and Douglas miraculously started to play, I think you can argue that Walsh had words for MDA to the effect that he needed to play TD.

Now- what may be true is both Walsh & MDA privately were against the trade, so Walsh can't be too harsh on MDA- but could still ask for some effort from the players.

If I were Dolan- and this may be too much like with Sterling did with Davis- I would have the Liberty Jerseys made out for all the players, and put in their lockers before the next game.

Uhhh he started out apologizing for Amar'e a player giving some of the most questionable effort.

He's been talking about Big Men for a long time now(January)....the coach doesn't like to play them. For crying out loud we can't sign Earl Barron because coach says he isn't better than Shawne Williams?

I wonder if this is his way of publicly telling his coach

"Look I'm defending you once again publicly, next year no trades.... play the bigs I acquire for you"

Otherwise it simply looks like two individuals who disagree very passionately philosophically and the GM is doing his best to quell the unrest from the locals.

Walsh is too kind, that is his achilles heel.

A Steinbrenner would've canned this idiot of a coach already.

Don't know how anyone can be critical about Walsh and accountabilty.

The Dude is the standard for how to publically accept responsability. He takes it.

We have no idea what is being said or done inside the organization but to start a list of GM's to take his place is really telling of lacking patience at any level.

Walsh is doing the proper thing by not making a media specticle of himself or the team.

ONe thing is for the balance of this season if it gets fixed its not going to be fixed by anything in the media.

Juice, we wanted/needed Donnie because he's classy and doesn't undermine those above or below him - certainly not publickly. We could have kept Isiah if we wanted snakes, greazballs and backstabbers.

why those 3? they haven't won anything. in fact pritchard and penn are responsible for taking an injury-prone oden over durant and a questionable portland rebuild. kiki, who knows what he was exactly responsible for in denver either with warkentien there.

There are other execs out there, let's not act like Walsh is going to be around forever. Heck if you want.... turn the team over to the good Christian Man in Houston with history here, if it makes you feel better.

Pritchard and Penn played a different game of trying to look after each other, which wasn't cool... but they didn't prove to be incompetent. Kiki's been good too...HEY HE WAS THE GUY WHO GOT CARMELO ANTHONY AND BUILT A PERENNIAL PLAYOFF TEAM AROUND HIM

I listed those guys for specific reasons... no bringing back Zeke

Penn-to exhaust all avenues of cap possibilities

From what I read Pritchard wanted to draft Durant. Vulcans had ultimate say and he wasn't fully included in the braintrust there.

Even with the Durant mistake as all execs are entitled to make a couple here and there.... Porltand was always in the playoffs during his tenure there and they had a manageable cap situation.

What's this got to do with Walsh being a class act? You find the strangest reasons for your angst.

I never said he wasn't classy. I actually admire his loyalty and class but sometimes it can be a weakness and maybe his biggest weakness at the moment. Sometimes one can be too nice. Why are you talking about his class?

We need some tough love now. He already took the bullet for him 2yrs in a row. Stop doing it.

Easy for Walsh to fall on the sword if he plans on leaving and going back to Indiana this summer.

Walsh is as good as gone anyways. He's taken the last bullet he can for mda. I doubt IT or whoever else comes in is remotely this kind.

Because that's what I take from the article. That you'd want him dragging his coach thru the mud pubublicly speaks more about you than Walsh.

Marky Walky is in place to take over for Walsh if it is so decided perhaps. H20 is also there.

Didn't say that either...

He could easily say he expects more out of his players and coach. The record since trade isn't reflective of the kind of effort needed to be better. While I take responsibility for making the trade and putting this team together, it's going to take collective effort from everyone to fix this. I'm currently evaluating everything at the moment to help this team get better including how we function as a unit.

See no dragging through the mud here and no this isn't some pristine model of how to talk to the press as Walsh has proven he's more than capable of knowing how to talk the talk

OTOH.....Stop going to the press saying it's not the coach's or players fault. We don't need to hear this anymore.

That's fine you took that from the article. Not everyone agrees with your take nor mine(although I caught his Mother Heness).... which speaks volumes about interpretation

This has been a horrible situation for a coach. They could have made the playoffs the first season and Walsh made the big moves to clear cap space.

One overlooked move which really hurt the team was moving Tim Thomas for Larry Hughes. An expiring contract for a me first garbage talent that became a disruptions.

And Walsh was doing what a man does. Takes responsibility. He doesn't make excuses like Melo. Running back on defense isn't hard to understand.

This wasn't his trade and the coach and GM were not on board. The owner is too blame nothing else.

Pandering to the fans sense of urgency of wanting someone to be "held accountable" is a press creation for satisfying anger when losing streaks exist.

Walsh knows the press is on MDA and right or wrong nothing good would come out of it for it to play in the media if there is anything to play.

Fans want accountabilty? Why? Tune in or tune out.
