Coach Mike D'Antoni is torn between getting his team more practice time and getting them some rest as they get ready to play their 17th game of this month Monday night at home against the Orlando Magic.

So in an effort to get a little of both, D'Antoni gave the Knicks the day off Sunday but told them they'd have to report for a shootaround Monday morning at 10 a.m.

It'll be the first morning shootaround at home for the team all season, as they typically only hold shootarounds on game days when they are on the road.

Lets be fair here: this has been a marathon, which has made it even harder to get anything going. If you were D'Antoni, what would you do?

Im sure he would like to have a practice, especially now that things are so bad, but he fears overworking his players, which is understandable.

It has been just bad timing that we have had so much problems and not much time to even rest and sink everything in.

Its the third consecutive cancelled practice during a six game losing streak. One of the most respected players in the league is talking about how bad the defensive schemes are, and earlier in the month the coach kept saying that the team just needed practice time. I don't see this as a non issue. These guys need to work together on fixing this. They are not functioning well as a unit and they only have 9 games left. I don't think another day of rest fixes that.

Why dos practice have to be running for 3 hours? They need to get to the faciliy and walk through plays, watch video and shoot around. D'Antoni is wrong to just do nothing.

The other thing that has been brought up in coverage has been the guys needing a break from themselves. I realize losing is hard, but this is supposed to be a players coach- shouldn't he be able to make them feel better as a group some other way besides giving them time off?

True, and that is a huge problem, but it still goes deeper than that. Mike's defensive philosophy is garbage. If he would just do things a bit more traditional the defense would automatically be a bit better. It still wouldnt stop 7' centers from eating us alive but it would disrupt others teams ball movement and prevent our defense from getting broken down so easily.

tj23 - Shelden Williams is not a vital component to ANY strategy at center in this mans NBA.

Philosophy never blocked a shot in his life.

He's garbage. I get that. But when Dantoni has all his bigs sit in the paint while the opposing pf/centers set bonecrushing picks on Douglas, Felton, Billups, or whoever it allows teams to break down our defense. It basically creates a 5 on 4. Any offense can make something good happen out of that.

To have a good rotation strategy would be to adjust to the other teams strategy and in case you didn't know we make other teams adjust to us.
