If we don't pick up his option, we save 14mill in the cap.

That way, we can fix our weaknesses during the offseason such as acquiring a defensive reliable center, a decent pg for cheap and improving the depth on the bench.

If we pick up the option for 14mm, mgmt will be limited in fixing several holes on this squad.

That would essentially take us out of the 2012 free agent derby, though. And we'd still need a point guard. The CBA might make the decision easier, though.

The owners are looking to lower/reduced salaries and the cap which would take knicks out of the running for chris paul or d will.

STAT and MELO basically used up 3/4 of our payroll..

We don't save 14 million against the cap. His 4 million dollar buyout counts. As of right now we would be at 60.4 million next year. Take 10 million off that for the Billups savings. That puts as at 50.4 million dollars.

Now consider the following, if you want them:
Derek Brown - around 1 million
Andy Rautins - around 800k
Shawne Williams - around 1 million
J. Jeffries - Please God No
Walker - 900k team option
Roger Mason - 1.4 million
Other roster spots - ????

Really, if we don't pick up Billups option (and I'm actually up in the air about it considering his poor play and that it would cost us around 8 million a year to extend him) - we are going to have like $5 million in cap space (considering resigning some of the above players) for a decent FA AND we then lose our MLE which is MORE!!! Things don't look good. (Now, had we been able to sign "ME"lo as a FA, we'd have assets and money (sorry but had to add that.)

earthman - nice list

Shawne Williams - He can stay.
Derek Brown - only if he shows signs of brilliance in Summer League.
Andy Rautins - see ya. We have enough one dimensional players.
J. Jeffries - what you said
Walker - see Andy Rautins
Roger Mason - on the bubble. A Summer League pick up can do what he do.

All talk about the 2012 Free Agent Derby s strictly prohibited. It is exhausting, redundant and creates more distractions than it is worth.

Build a young team and stick with it.

Ya know that's one of the things the Dolan's and the Thomas' don't get.... people get invested in their underdogs and want to see them grow. Gallo and Chandler and Moz had a lot of fans cheering for them to take it to the next level. I dunno if I feel this team like I did the one before the all star break for quite some time. If they did have hatters.

Olbrannon - how can you feel this team when none of them have been in New York for longer than six months?

Toney Douglas and Bill Walker as the longest tenured Knicks? Gimme a break.

The saddest story of the season was the NYTimes piece on the restaurant employees who missed their friend Gallo stopping by for dinner. Not the basketball player, their friend. The constant infatuation with the next free agent or the next best fantasy trade only creates one thing, a revolving door of mercenaries who only play for a check. Not the city or the uniform. They play out of fear. By the trade deadline every player has their head on a swivel and their families and loved ones on edge.

If the nouveau Knicks cannot discover the joy of trust and playing basketball, the slate grey cloud hanging over the franchise will only linger.

Misterearl - I can pretty much agree with your list, but am on the fence regarding Rautins. I'd like to see him play some. Walker doesn't play defense and does little else except shoot (well), so he is pretty much redundant with Shawne Williams. I also agree regarding Mason, I wonder if we can find a younger cat with more desire to do what he does. (Maybe Rautins? - half the cost).

So, What are we going to have free, money wise? Say around 5 - 7 million? We are going to be in a problem if we do extend Billups though, look at all the salaries we have to consider, still need a center, get the picture?

I also feel very little connection to this team. It doesn't mean I'm not pulling for them, it's like withdrawls or the like. The game to me is not just about winning, but about watching your talent grow. You try to keep some talent and not just make it into a business (no matter that it is). Again, thanks MElo.

Back to Billups, a lot is going to depend on if Mike is back next year. Really, we have two recovering ISO players and a half court "PG" who can't really play defense. We are in a bind. I say a center is more important and that we could get by with Douglas as the PG. A lot hinges on Jerome Jordon - if this kid can give us what Mos did or a bit more, then we might be ok with Billups and some other role players.
