The last time the Knicks made the Finals it was during the strike shortened season. Regardless this was the last team we had that completed for the championship. So here is the 1998-1999 Knicks roster. Players that we currently have that are comparable (talent wise/frachise player/similar attributes)are in parenthesis. Who are we missing and who is a good realistic candidate for the New Knicks to fill those spots?

Patrick Ewing C (Amar'e Stoudemire)
Larry Johnson F
Latrell Sprewell G (Carmelo Anthony)
Allan Houston G (Chauncey Billups)
Charlie Ward G (Tony Douglas)
Marcus Camby C-F
Chris Childs G (Anthony Carter)
Kurt Thomas F (Ronny Turiaf)
Dennis Scott F (Shawn Williams)
Chris Dudley C (Jarred Jeffries)
Herb Williams C-F
David Wingate G-F (Landry Fields)
Rick Brunson G
Ben Davis F

Looking at the team this way I truly believe that the Knicks are not that far away. Yes there are missing pieces, main areas - defense, rebounding and a strong veteran prescence/young guy with upside. (Please no banter/ranting about players that we used to have). Just trying to look at things from a different perspective. Also I'm not saying that Landry Fields is David Wingate - Just had a hard time placing him. Thoughts?

That 99 run was very special and is one of those things that took a perfect storm of of a lot of different things. Comparing htis roster to that one doesn't really say anything. In fact, I think this roster is at least as talented, if not more. The problem is that talent will only take you so far. Your desire and will to win takes you the rest of the way. I know it sounds cheesey as hell but it's the truth. Houston, Spree, LJ and those guys left everything on the court. A lot of that was because of JVG, who wasn't the best coach in the world, but he demanded effort. His players responded.

Guys like STAT and Melo are HOF caliber guys. But when it looks like they're taking a night off, which should never happen, our coach's have to lay down the fu*king law. One thing I'll say about the pre Melo Knicks is that even when they lost bad I never got the feeling they were'nt hustling. I don't feel the same about this roster yet. The pieces are there to make a nice run. We'll see how they react the rest of the season to people saying that Denver got the better of the deal, D'Antoni can't coach, we've got a bunch of 1 on 1 players, etc. We'll see how much pride they have. Talent isn't a question anymore.

Sorry we have 0 players that defend like Ewing, and he was the core of that team. This team is not comparable really. That 99 Knicks team also had solid defenders at all positions. This team? I think Fields is our most solid defender, and he is a rookie.
Rose is not the answer.

1 physical bigman that plays big & doesn't shy away from contact in the paint is the only thing we really need IMO... all the other role players on this team compared to the '99 squad are easily comparable, we're only missing someone who can enforce the paint.
After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.
