Rewind

John Condon, Madison Square Garden public address legend for 41 seasons had a great way of inserting the proper tone in the flow of the game. "I used to imitate John (Condon) because I wanted to be like him," current Garden PA man, Mike Walczewski said in a 2004 interview. "I have the highest respect for this job. I have fun, but I take it very seriously. The way I perform my job today is a tribute to him."

Fast Forward To The Big Trade

Watching The Big East tournament, Walczewski seems to have a more even tone that does not overpower the crowd. Watching Knicks games since Carmelo, it is as if someone gave him the directive to overplay EVERY goal Carmelo scores. It is tiring.

Anthony will make a truckload of baskets in The Garden, so our PA man needs more crayons in his voice box.

(first quarter) The classic Condon style: "That was Carmelo Anthony"

(second quarter) "Ant....thony!"

(third quarter) "Car-MELLOOOO!"

(fourth quarter critical baskets) The Dave Zinkoff playoff edition: "Car-MELLOOOO...(pause, then rapid fire) AN-tha-knee!"

jus' sayin'

Earl, you need to be concerned with substance rather than style.

This thread is weaksauce.

I might say that what amateurs call a style is usually only the unavoidable awkwardnesses in first trying to make something that has not heretofore been made.

The Way Back Machine

(2009) After each of his four baskets, the Knicks' long-time public address announcer Mike Walczewski, using a thick Italian accent, said "Daneeelo Gal-lin-ar-ay" and then the Italian songs "Volare" or "That's Amore" were played. When asked about hearing his name, Gallinari said: "I need to talk a little bit with them about that. Because it's not so good, the pronunciation. I will talk about that. As for the music, no, not so good."

Just to be clear. Walczewski does a great job. Is it nitpicking? Sure. This is New York and the authentic sounds of The Garden are what make it special.

The trend towards sound effects and over-amped fake enthusiasm is not what we do. That is for cities like Indianapolis with the car race sounds, or Dallas, with its game show announcer. A few years ago, when the The Garden producers tried to pump in taped sounds of people chanting "dee-fense" the live crowd did what they are supposed to do - they booed.

This is New York. We don't need no steekin' extra sound effects. It is a pet peeve of The Answer Man. So sue him.

I'm jus' sayin'.

I don't like that his Carmelo Anthony call is the same tone as his Stephon Marbury call. Although I guess its the same tone as his Greg Anthony call too.

VDesai - You noticed that too, huh? Good lookin' out.

Carmelo deserves original calls that match the diversity of his game, and at the same time do NOT overshadow Stoudemire. Why?

Without Amare making the decision to sign in NYC and proclaim "the Knicks are back" over the summer, none of this fun happens.
