My hope is that technologies like this will let us more accurately evaluate a player's contributions, making debates like "Is Melo a superstar?" a thing of the past.
That's exactly what this technology should provide: It produces vast data sets that can be culled by software for meaningful bits of information about a player's stats, not just in the box score, but in every nuance of what happens on the court, from the positional relationships between that player and the other players, to the height of his vertical in different shooting spots, to really anything a team can conceive.
The data is collected in real-time and provides a full 3d "picture" of the entire game in data that can then be queried and turned into reports. Are NBA players ready for such a thinking approach to game prep? Doubtful. But it will certainly change the coaching profession by giving information they never analyzed before.
