Mavericks land Brewer

By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports

tweet63EmailPrintCorey Brewer(notes) has agreed to sign a multiyear contract with the Dallas Mavericks, a league source told Yahoo! Sports.

More From Adrian WojnarowskiD-Will becomes Nets' vision for future Mar 2, 2011 Perkins gets 4-year, $35 million extension Mar 1, 2011 After securing a buyout from the New York Knicks, Brewer became one of the most desirable free agents for his athleticism and defensive versatility. Most of the NBA’s contenders – including Boston, San Antonio and Dallas – pursued the 6-foot-9 forward over the past several days.

Brewer, who turns 25 on Saturday, averaged 8.6 points and 1.5 steals for the Minnesota Timberwolves this season before he was sent to the Knicks in the Carmelo Anthony(notes) trade.

Good for him. It was a tough situation here. We have serious financial concerns. Every role player we add is gonna have to be extremely cheap, so this kind of thing is understandable.

He was the best player on the Joakim Noah and Al Horford Univ of FL back-to-back national championship teams. He can play. He just can
t dominate physiclaly the way he used to. If he finds himself in a position where a team will be patient with him, I could see him having a Bruce Bowen type impact on a really good team. He has skill. i really wish the Knicks could've figured a way to have him fit in but accept why he was let go and was likely for the greater good

Also totally agreed. I loved that Florida team.

Have to say, I'm glad he went to a Western Conf team...

Without knowing what the Celtics cap situation is like, couldn't a team just pick up Brewer's waived contract and steal him away from the Mavericks?

Celts just announced signing of Sasha Pavlovic and Mavs poised to announce official signing of Brewer to three-year deal in excess of $7 mil

I'm sorry, but two big questions?

How do you give unproven Corey Brewer 3yrs $7M?!!?

And how the heck did the Mavs have that kind of caproom? Hoopshype says their payroll is $87M!! Did they have the mid-level or something?

while the mav's do not have cap room under the current CBA...according to article 7.6.34 of the current CBA, they are entitled to 7M in 'crap' room which allows them to sign 'crappy' players to multi year deals even though they are over the current cap

good question...but the better question is 'why'?

Im pretty sure they signed him to the vets Minimum for 3 yrs and probably included some incentives.

Good deal for Brewer and the Mavs.

I'm rooting for the Mavs to make a serious run this year. I can see them in the Finals. This is a solid addition that should help them immediately.
WE AIN'T NOWHERE WITH THIS BUM CHOKER IN CARMELO. GIVE ME STARKS'S 2-21 ANY DAY OVER THIS LACKLUSTER CLUSTEREFF.

Corey Brewer playing well for the Mavs tonight, getting steals & nasty dunks in the lane... still not sure how this guy never got a shot w/this team, he's clearly a good defensive player.

Its a question that keeps getting asked about certain guys. It doesn't make sense.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that he specifically asked to be bought out.

I think he wanted guaranteed minutes.

i don't see him asking for a trade if he knew he would get a shot to play... i have a hard time believing Derrick Brown will end up being a better option off the bench than Brewer just mho... whatever we can't change things now but i was actually excited about getting him as part of that Melo deal when Donnie made that trade... shame he never got a chance here.

He is a good player, 7th pick in the draft? His only weakness is his outside shot. He would have been a nice player in NY if he was given a chance.

having Brewer to stick on Jason Terry & take him out of the game offensively would have been huge in this game... he's been torching us w/jumpshots the entire 1st half.

You have to wonder if coach and GM are on the same page. How many players has Donnie brought in that the coach doesnt seem interested in?

Wojo: Brewer to sign with the Mavs.
