Why Didn’t the Knicks Keep Brewer?
By Tommy Dee on Mar 02, 2011, 7:52 am

On the surface, the Knicks let a potential defensive player slip off the roster. It is a decision that seems baffling. The question fans have to ask themselves is heading into next season would you want Corey Brewer on the books for $5 million dollars for next year.

Truth be told, via a source, is the Knicks actively tried to deal Brewer immediately after his inclusion in Carmelo Anthony deal. There were no takers. Clearly, those teams interested in his services knew that the Knicks were not going to mess with his near $5 million dollar qualifying offer seeing that they want to keep roster flexibility moving forward.

Brewer’s agent, Happy Walters, also represents Amar’e Stoudemire and Shawne Williams whom they’d like to keep next year.

Obviously, this doesn’t address the idea why Mike D’Antoni wouldn’t play Brewer, which is probably due to his lack of perimeter shooting. Right or wrong, the Knicks allowed Brewer to walk so he can land on another roster with the hopes of getting his Q-offer picked up leading to another contract.

They’d rather take their chances in developing a manageable talent and contract in Derrick Brown who they can keep on the cheap and try to develop into an asset moving forward.

At least Walsh has some idea of the financial impact of things, always looking ahead -- unlike the-former-GM-who-shall-not-be-named.

Donnie thinking beyond the now and building for the future is truly refreshing.

We really all need to stop jumping the gun on everything. Look at the media today after the loss to Orlando. We beat Miami and we are the greatest, we loose to Orlando and we are horrible.

agreed we need to let this team play together for awhile and gell..overall i like what i see and think they have the potential to be a tough out in the playoff for anyone... their are weakness but most teams have them...are we winning championship this yr highly doubtful...are we much more competitive now and for the next several yrs clearly yes...

if he clears waivers- he has no QO to pick up.

We could have kept him and waive him.

Now- if we wanted to have kept him- couldn't we just resign him for less than his QO?

Not sure I understand this -- Why did he have to be bought out now? That's what I'm not sure about..We couldn't have used him the rest of the year and then just let him expire at the end of the year and not offer the QO? Is that right? That's what I would've liked to see but I guess it couldn't be done..I guess the cap hold would still remain? Is it a certain amount of time and then the QO automatically gets picked up the previous season??? And then what if we kept him and he played well?? Maybe we could've picked up the QO for next year to retain him for 1 more year no??

It could be viewed as bad business....keep in mind his agent is "Happy Walters". If there isn't a market for Brewer being that it was known he was available to be traded for then obviously he needs a more prominent role on a team or to play a respectable role on a team that is in contention/playoffs. He needed showcasing opportunity. There was no guarantee he'd get playing time here so how would he be able to if at all to increase his value down the stretch?

This is the type of decision that has earned Donnie his highly respected reputation.

So we lost out on Brewer for what 25 games? A guy we were NOT gonna extend a QO. A guy who was a nice piece but let's be honest here, he was not putting us over any hump. This move, IMO, pays bigger dividends then if we kept him. It shows the type of player friendly/higher class (it stops at Donnie) management we have that players will pay attention to.

And for a those Jefferies vs Brewer guys...Brewer was a good defender the same way Larry Hughes was or the equivalent of a CB in football. A more then solid one on one guy. Jefferies is the equivalent of someone like a Derek Fisher/Tyrone Hill/Buck Williams type defender or a MLB or Safety in football. He is just smart, knows where he is supposed to go, can direct traffic on who needs to be where, and is an above adequate defender at 1-4 positions and is at least average at the 5.

Brewer may be able to help limit one guy but I think Jared can elevate the team concept of defense, giving him greater value.
