Wizards Waive Thornton
March 1, 2011

Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has waived forward Al Thornton after coming to an agreement on a contract buyout.

“The additions of Rashard Lewis and Mo Evans combined with Josh Howard’s return from injury gave us a logjam at the small forward spot,” said Grunfeld. “Coming to terms on a contract buyout with Al was mutually beneficial, as it allows us to clear space in the rotation and allows him the chance to pursue an opportunity with another team.”

Thornton was originally acquired from the L.A. Clippers in a three-team, six-player deal on February 17, 2010. He appeared 49 games for the Wizards this season, averaging 8.0 points and 3.2 rebounds.

i don't see them making a move for him having just added a tweener...but I'm all for Al Thornton he should at least know defense and can get to the rim, rebound or knock down an open shot. Don;t remember him as a passer though. Think Chandler on him but not quite as strong. Just pulling from memory here ..haven't watched him much as a pro.
Bill Simmons on Tyreke Evans "The prototypical 0-guard: Someone who handles the ball all the time, looks for his own shot, gets to the rim at will and operates best if his teammates spread the floor to watch him."

WOW. Al Thorton was thought to be a rising young player with a promising future just 2 years ago. Now he gets waived!! I think the Knicks should definitely go review some tape on him. He played fairly well for the Clippers. If I knew he was available, I would have looked at him before getting Brown, but now that we have Brown, I doubt the Knicks pursue him.

Funny/shocking to see that Al Thornton is 28yrs old - same age as Amar'e and 2yrs older than Melo.
