I don't know if it's that he was still a villain to me from the sucker punch...

The fact that we lost players I really loved...

Or that he just seems a little "cold" out there and in interviews...

Don't get me wrong, I'm for this trade.. hard to swallow but I'm for it... I am just having a hard time really emotionally embracing his arrival... hopefully it subsides moving forward, it's only been one game... Looking forward to tonight... Just wanted to know if I'm not alone here

in comparison I took to Billups immediately.. Reminds me of Derrick Harper... I actually just ordered a Chauncey Billups shirt form the Knicks site...

I think is early but he is more laid back than Amare. Amare comes out as Alpha but I think a lot of NY media will start to put messages out there about Melo vs Amare's team. From my observation since he came into the league he always been like the 3rd guy person but he definitely can produce.

I think you'll come around on Melo once he wins a few close games for us with his clutch shooting.

I miss the guys we lost, too. But dwelling isn't my thing. I am ready to move forward with our starphuck strategy and enjoy the ride. Melo has more swagger than we are used to here, but Amare kind of balances him out, solid dude and all.

I think Melo needs a little bit of time to adjust to NYC fans. We're way more demanding than Denver, which is a very laid back place.

I said the following 4 hours ago in a different thread.

I sometimes think Melo's demeanor/gate works against people's perception of him. He's not a dynamic personality like James or Kobe, and he's not a attack dog like Garnett.

And he certainly has flaws in his game (he is NOT James, who is in a class by himself).

So minus that cetain aura some guys possess, his game gets dissected to a nth degree.

I can understand where you're coming from. Personally, the addition of Billups is what made the trade bearable. We're on the verge of something great here but I too can't help but miss Gallo, Felton & Chandler. Like I said before, that unit was a key part of what helped drain the poison from this team and bring some positivity back to the Garden. Their enthusiasm, unselfish play, hard work and good attitudes were fun to watch. And if they lost a game, it wasn't because of a lack of effort and apathy like the last 10 or so years. I've watched the past 2 Nuggets games for that reason and I hope the best for those guys. It'll take a while to warm up to Carmelo. You just know great things are about to happen and I suppose once the team builds some chemistry, it'll rub off. In the mean time, watch the nuggets too! Like some others around here, I've adopted them as my Western Conference team and they are a lot of fun to watch ( minus Kmart...can't stand him).

Actually I have to disagree with you. Love Melos personality and love the fact he wants to be a Knick!
fishmike 9/27/2024 11:00 PM Ug I hate this. The idea of Towns is great until you see what a pussy he is. Jules is a dog. DD was a flamethrower locked up cheap for 3 more years. First Leon move I hate

"Winning is the best deodorant" - John Madden

Elite - you raise an interesting question about how fans identify and bond with individual players. What is your single most important criteria for LIKING Carmelo?

"Or that he just seems a little "cold" out there and in interviews..."

If interviews are a determining factor in your liking a player, you may be crossing into personality traits that have more to do with polish and vocabulary, rather than who they are away from the court. Reggie Jackson was not liked as a baseball player in New York. He was brash, "outspoken" and arrogant. On the other hand, none of that mattered the night he took three swings and planted three baseballs in the Yankee Stadium bleachers.

If winning trumps anything superficial, what happens when winning (using whatever watermark you prefer) is replaced by a losing streak?

It is a great question.

I remember how Xavier McDaniel got into a brawl with Oak when he was a Sonic and wasn't very popular with Knicks fans until the X-man became a Knick and was welcomed in NY. I expect the same thing will happen here eventually to the haters

GustavBahler - I would offer that welcoming a player is different from liking a player.

We welcomed Stephon Marbury with open arms. Number 3 jerseys were flying off the shelves. He quickly wore out his welcome and the more we saw him up close, the sadder the story became.

To describe Stephon as likable, after his first full season, would be a stretch.

Fans can be won over or let's say can accept the player overall but still not like them as they would any regular player who wears the Knick uniform. I absolutely did not want Amar'e under any circumstance because his game isn't complete. Now that he's here I respect how he handles himself more so off the court and he seems like he really wants what's right. I probably will never like Carmelo the BASKETBALL player or his style of play....I can take to being drawn to his personality/character assuming he improves/displays it with professionalism/dignity.

I don't have a default rule, no matter the team that says if you're wearing the uniform of the team I root for then I like you. No you have to earn my fan fare to a large degree. If you were a douche before being a Knick, you're not automatically a saint because you grace the uniform.

Take for instance a lot of fans here pay more attention to the Nuggets than they ever have. Even more so than when Carmelo was with them.... knowing he wanted leave to come here. The Nuggets are not the Knicks but nevertheless fans are largely drawn to players and their character therefore tuning into more Nuggets games than ever before because you dearly miss those players.

I'm happy and mad this trade happened. I'm happy in the sense that now I hope so many of you see how being a fan involves so much more than TEAM loyalty. It can involve so many different variables none of which are fundamentally or principally wrong assuming they are based on solid aforementioned designations. I'm extremely disappointed because we could have maintained the fan relationship we have with moved players, while wearing the Knick uniform. We sacrificed way too much, when we didn't have to.

The paradox of New York is that its media has an insatiable appetite. The most successful NYC athletes combine magnetism with superior performances when the lights are brightest. Playoffs. Derek Jeter is a prime example. Joe Namath converted one guarantee in the Super Bowl to a career.

Patrick Ewing was respected, but not embraced. Good Riddance is a harsh headline.

I think what's more important right now is: how will you see Jeffries as a player now that he is coming back to a team with the star he choked. Thats the most pressing question right now in Knick Kingdom.

I was describing a situation where a player went from villain to being liked in NY. Don't think Marbury was ever a villain in NY until he after he came to NY. The point is that at the time X had a bad rep and he lost it when he started helping the Knicks. I believe the same thing will happen here unless Melo goes the same route as Marbury and basically says "F everybody".

Strange, I do not remember Xavier McDaniel NYK jerseys being a hot item.

If the Knicks go 1-3 by next Wednesday night, we will have a glimpse of how likable Carmelo is.

nothing like taking a week to really think about whether you like a player.

I seem to remember quite a few people on the street wearing them at the time but I don't know how the sales were overall. He was one bad mother. X wasn't in NY very long so he couldn't be expected to sell a lot of jerseys.
