I was looking forward to the game all day. Got pumped up by the silly line-up introductions and other hype that usually leaves me cold, and then was oddly removed and uninterested during the game. It wasn't til my son said, "Who are those guys pretending to be Knicks?" that it home (and he's a huge Melo supporter and was all in favor of the trade). It's going to take me a while to get instinctively behind these guys. I miss Gallo and Ray Ray.

I haven't weighed in on the trade as I don't have much new to add. We gave up a lot, perhaps more than we needed to, and got a lot back. We'll have to see if we're better off as it plays out. I really don't have a strong opinion about whether it was smart or not. I see both sides of the argument. That's not the point of this thread. More about how hard it is to change allegiences on a dime. I haven't felt it so strongly with other trades.

I know what you mean, although I had seen the pics of our yoots in Denver the day before, watched the press conference and saw the new guys in their warmups, and vented on this board and with friends about my mixed feelings, so maybe that all was a good transition for me by gametime.

It definitely was surreal but by halftime these were my guys. I wonder if part of that mental dissonance was watching these new 2011 Knicks at home in a throwback away uniform? Also you are seeing the new fellas on Legends Night next to people you really had a connection with like Starks & the Pearl or even H20. It's going to take a while for them to earn the kind of attachment we have with those players.

Felt the same way watching the game last night. I remarked to a friend that "I'm not even into this game right now" and that it's "hard to root for these guys". I didn't watch the second half.

I wonder if this will wear off after some games. I was so into our old team, Gallo, Chandler, feel like a bond has been severed.

WE AIN'T NOWHERE WITH THIS BUM CHOKER IN CARMELO. GIVE ME STARKS'S 2-21 ANY DAY OVER THIS LACKLUSTER CLUSTEREFF.

oh get over it

Mozgov was here for 50 games, as was Ray. Chandler and Gallo were here for a couple of relatively win-less seasons. Yeah, they were cool and all but.. come on now

Hey man, that's just what the feel of the game was like. I'm guessing it will go away, but it's weird. We sent half the team away. And it's not like Gallo and Diseased Wilson were on a stagnant, losing team. They were 28-26 and on the way to the playoffs, the best season in a decade, and still improving.

I was into the game big time but I do agree I will keep tabs on Denver and I wish them all the best.

I will miss Felton the most. But BBBBBBBillups! is an ideal replacement.

It was ugly basketball, especially when we're used to D'Antoni's system being run fairly well. What got me pumped up were the little plays where you really saw the potential and the fact that we won the game despite these guys not knowing what they're supposed to do on the floor on either end.

To score 114 when the offense looks bogged down on most possessions... That makes me feel pretty good about our potential. When Barron comes here, we'll have the pieces to make a nice run. Tonight, we'll probably get spanked, but I think Orlando will be a good test. We'll have had a few days to get some idea of how the pieces fit in Mike's system and Orlando's looking sluggish lately.

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Charles Oakley, Latrell Sprewell, Alan Houston, Larry Johnson, Anthony Mason, John Starks, Derek Harper, and Ray Felton for that mattter. None drafted by the Knicks. We all strangers once. We all had to learn to love them.

"Homegrown" is a state of mind.

The word is that only Gallo might start. Chandler and Ray off the bench. Imagine Ray having to back up Ty Lawson.

we just added a superstar to the roster and are a better team than we were a week ago and yet we cannot thrive on prosperity for whatever reason. don't dwell on this, it's a waste of time and energy.

For me I just found myself even more attached to the guys still here. It was simply aweseom to see Douglas back to playing how we all hoped Douglas could. Scrappy hustle, hitting big shots. He took two bad shots (one from deep 3 he drilled) but the others were very good and in the flow. He's been hurt all year... if that should is back to healthy and he's a 100% thats a big piece. Watching Billups put his arm around Toney, get him settled and smile instantly made me a huge Billups fan. Its Derek Harper all over again.

Also Fields is going to be a bigger piece on both ends of the floor. That baseline dunk was so orgasmic my scream scared the dog off the couch. Gallo would have been a SICK 3rd option but its water under the bridge.

Melo is a diva but he's our diva. He's a homegrown NY kid and his favorite player of all time is Bernard King. He was another team's franchise player and forced a trade here. I can get with that. Nobody has ever forced their way here... it usually a security guard showing them OUT.

I'm into it... to me the most important piece is Walsh. He's the guy I trust can turn dusty farts and Dolan's money into quality rotation guys. He's the key.

Melo is so physical. Even when he misses he pounds the guy who guards him.

Man I was so pumped I never once thought about our old teammates until after the game. I was curious about the way the crowd would react, what the Garden would do (which I didn't get to see due to technical issues), How the new guys would mesh with the old guys... It was really interesting to watch. I had a feeling that Melo wouldn't be very good. It's hard to go thru all of that and not have it effect you.

The thing that really got me is just how good Billups is and how we really do have a big 3 already. This team is gonna be tough once they get in synch. It's so hard for teams to defend 3 great players. I can't wait to see the rest of the season. People that doubted if this was worth it are gonna change their minds. Chan and Gallo do not equal Melo, much less Melo and Billups. This is a major upgrade and I was mesmerized by the differences.

Walsh didnt *want* to make this trade for the same reason(s) I didnt like it and a lot of others. Knicks have SUCKED for a decade. In comes a new GM, cleans house and we have a stud along with a roster of young hard working mostly home grown guys. Knicks are winning, in the playoffs and life is good again. If your a fan and love sports its impossible to not appreciate those guys. We have been starved for so long, and lets be honest.. there is going to be one more big player movement when we offer NO a huge package of all our young guys, picks and Billups for CP3 and OK4, and NO will do it because CP3 will threaten to sign here anyway. In any case its a weird feeling... like getting used to our new mail order wife who's hotter than our old one.

The big thing for me, the goal this year is to win the first round. Whether its the Bulls or we come together and move up I think this team MUST win round one. You have a proven playoff finals MVP in Billups with who of the big stars in the game in Melo/Amare you need to get past round one.

bernard - well written and honest description of your feelings.

orangeblob is correct, how can you watch half of the team you rooted for sent away, and not feel some empathy for their departure?

If you look at athletes as simply stats and objects of gratification it is easy to brush it off and say "we got better"

If you see them as people, it is impossible to forget what Felton said in October about bringing a winner to New York. If you are the restaurant owner and staff who made friends with Gallo it is not so simple to have a member of the family not show up for dinner.

DrAlpaeus poses some great questions that can only be answered one at a time by each fan of the NYK.

Building an emotional connection is what the most successful franchises strive for. Sound effects, flashing lights and sexy cheerleaders optional.

I believe that Toney Douglas is the longest tenured Knick. But you know what, it feels like the old stink is finally washed out. I root for whatever's best for the brand and this what's best

good post. i understand both sides of the argument and i miss the guys, too.

they dragged us up out of a decade of horrible basketball and were playing well. it's really hard to cut ties with those guys.

oddly, the weirdest sight was wilson in denver. i didn't realize that i was really used to him being a big part of this team.

sports is pretty mercenary these days.

I really feel numb, I loved Gallo and will certainly also watch the denver nuggets from now.
Weird times.
