Chad Ford (1:05 PM)

Think it was a GREAT move. Some argue he's the best point guard in the league and everyone agrees he's one of the top 3. He's young. Elite PGs are almost impossible to get via trade or free agency. He'll have a bigger impact in NJ than Melo would have. I know that Donnie Walsh preferred Williams to Melo. The Nets got the better deal.

The Chad. WTF is he still talking about the NBA. I thought he went Hawaii bound to teach.

The Nets have no assurances that Williams will stick around. They won't know that until 2012, until then the jury is still out.

The Nets had essentially three lotto picks to offer in a trade - their own in 2011, GSW's in 2012 and Favors (19yrs old, #3 overall in 2010.

The Knicks couldn't come ANYWHERE NEAR that kind of offer.

We always knew that the Nuggets prefered the Nets offer - because it was better for a rebuilding team.

I truly question whether it would have been possible to even start a conversation with Utah for what we had to offer.

Maybe he did. Seems credible enough.

But so what?

Utah has phones.

If the Knicks were in the game, Utah would have let them know.

I would've preferred Williams to Melo too. But Amar'e seems to prefer Melo, and I think NJ's offer was better.

I am inclined to believe this wholeheartedly. Picks/Favors/low salary better then Moz/Chandler/Gallo/immediate raises over next 2 years.

And Harris can play too and may have turnaround value in the summer.

Keep this in mind too. Utah is a 1/2 game up in the 8th seed. They were probably going to right the ship enough to perhaps compete for the last slot.

This trade could wind up locking them into a lottery slot, which may not be the worst thing for them if they're dedicated to rebuilding.

Two lottery selection next year, with one probably being in the top 5 and the other a wild card.

Not bad.

Edit: better.

Minnesota ownd Utah's 2011 pick, but it's top 16 protected.

Utah gets it back and they fall outta the 8th seed.

More from Chad's chat.

Do you think Knicks even knew D-Will was available?

Chad Ford (1:29 PM)

Not sure Knicks could've have gotten him for the deal they offered the Nuggets. But yes, they knew.

Not to mention that Chandler, Gallo, Moz repeat what they currently have: AK47/Hayward/Milsap/Jefferson/Fesenko/Okur.

Williams makes the guys around him better- Melo makes the guys around him work harder because he does not do much for a team if he does not have the ball in his hands.

I would have had much less regret over losing the guys we did if Williams, and not Anthony, had ended up on the Knicks.

He is a much better player all-around player and a better fit for our team, IMO.

How is any of this relevant?

You make the moves you can make.

I can only imagine the frustration of some of you if you believe the Knicks should be the ones making every deal that you like and getting every player that you covet.

yea.. you look at what the Nets gave up and its way more. Is Deron better? Maybe... but not by much. I agreee Deron is a better fit for NJ.

Also the big part of the Knicks deal was the $18mm the trade immediatly saves Denver. The Nets had better value, the Knicks saved the Nugs a ton more $$$. Its a push. If I am the Nuggs I would prefer the Nets deal. Rather have the high caliber picks and talent

The is kind of a "what if" thread... and it would seem that Donnie had thoughts of Williams.

Just saying I would have preferred Williams over Anthony. We did not have a mix of players Utah might have wanted in a trade for Williams... so be it.

Down the line, though, especially given the questions regarding the CBA, there may come a time when we cannot pick up a D.Williams because we are locked in to Amare/Melo.

By 2012 our big two will be coming in at around $40M/Yr, and none of us know what the CBA will bring.

Losing the guys we gave up is one thing, not having the ability to build a team beyond Amare and Anthony is the real issue down the line.

And can you imagine the frustration of some who wonder if we give up more for someone than we had to give up?

If Utah preferred our pieces they would have approached us, clearly.. So, if Walsh preferred Williams over Melo, he would be here if Utah wanted it. Clearly they didn't. Considering the 2012 free agents are 2 pgs and one center, it made the most sense going with Melo. Remember, Williams might not (or probably won't) resign, though word is that the Russian is going to make more noise...

I do think from an outside perspective that Favors, and 2 more lottery picks plus Harris is better than our offer. (Though I think Gallo may be something really really special still - though so can 19 year old Favors.)

Me too.

Would have preferred Lebron James over Stat or 'Melo too.

And can you imagine the frustration of some who wonder if we give up more for someone than we had to give up?

No.

At some point it think it's just healthier and more fun to accept what occurs and not pine for a fantasy.

I don't like that the had to give up what they did.

But if given the choice of the trade that was made and no trade at all, i choose the former.

Cliff Lee liked the Phillies better, I move on.

I just don't see the appeal of what might have been.

Talk about a perpetual source of frustration.

Nets made a great deal, so did UTAH!

Whats on paper don't matter, its whats on the court.

Favors will be good one day. Harris is decent enough and Deron is a great piece to build with.

NY wins! Better players in the city.

Great point guards rarely win championships. Its the good ones that win. Soounds crazy right but just check the history of PGs to win championships and you will find that Majic was the last great point guard to win a championship.
