I've heard Golden State actually wants to keep him - they need depth up front and might actually be trying to make a playoffs push at 3 games under .500. They are only 4.5 games back of Utah and 6 games back of Denver...

Report: Warriors acquire Troy Murphy from New Jersey, which also deals for Deron Williams

Oakland Tribune staff and wire report

The Warriors will deal seldom-used Brandan Wright and Dan Gadzuric to the New Jersey Nets for ex-Golden State No. 1 draft pick Troy Murphy, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday morning.

Golden State is expected to receive a second-round draft pick from New Jersey in the trade, which hasn't been announced yet. The Warriors would then likely buy out Murphy's contract, making him a free agent.

Yahoo Sports reported that the Nets' biggest splash Wednesday was dealing for Utah Jazz star point guard Deron Williams. The Nets will send point guard Devin Harris, rookie forward Derrick Favors, two No. 1 draft picks and $3 million to Utah for the All-Star Williams.

One of the No. 1 picks going to Utah is the Warriors' top pick in 2011, which has partial lottery protection.
Williams, a former Syracuse star, is averaging 21.3 points and 9.7 assists per game this season with Utah. His troubled relationship with Jerry Sloan has been partially blamed for the sudden retirement recently of the longtime Jazz coach

Wright could blossom in NJ like Humphries did. Murphy would be great for the Knicks.

yahoo sports:

After nearly two months of trying to find a trade for him, the New Jersey Nets are near an agreement to send Troy Murphy to the Golden State Warriors for Brandan Wright and Dan Gadzuric, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The trade is expected to be completed on Wednesday, but could still become larger with the inclusion of Nets point guard Devin Harris into a three-team package – most likely with Portland or Dallas, sources said.

The Warriors, who would also receive a 2012 second-round pick from the Nets, will buy out the remainder of the $12 million owed Murphy in the final year of his contract and allow him to become a free agent.

Murphy, a 6-foot-11 forward, has the interest of several playoff contenders, including Orlando, Dallas, Miami and Boston, sources said. His 3-point range and size make him attractive to playoff teams.

After Murphy was traded to the Nets from Indiana in the preseason, he fought injuries and ultimately failed to fit into coach Avery Johnson’s plans. Murphy played just 18 games before the Nets allowed him to leave the team on Jan. 7 and await a trade.

I don't understand this move.

GSW are under the Luxury threshold.

Brandan Wright and Dan Gadzuric are ending contracts.

Why trade for a guy and buy him out?

OK, maybe they save like a couple of $ and get a second round pick?

I don't get the move or at least it doesn't fully add up for me

If they buy him out where does he go?

Most likely MIA? I'd love to see him in OKC. They need shooters. Portland would be nice too.

Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please

Penny pinching? Do they have any players that we might be interested in?

Other than Biedrins, not really. Golden State upper management is trying to get Ekpe Udoh to take the center position but there also rumors about breaking up their back court due to the new owners philosophy.

Hmmmm....Stephen Curry then and pick up other contracts. This would close the need for CP3 or Derron.

Knicks advantage is Murphy wouldn't have to uproot. He can just stay in the area until the offseason.

And the Donnie Walsh connection.

And mayne he wouldn't mind sticking to the Nets by putting up some nice numbers in play-off games.

But you probably have to give the advantage to Miami. They'll take size and shooting anywhere they can get it. Orlando is oft-mentioned as well.

plus i know murphy is from morristown, nj (I played against him in high-school) and that can't hurt to stay at "home" either.
