Carmelo Anthony: New Knicks Star Will Reportedly Wear Number 7
By Ryan Rudnansky (Featured Columnist) on February 22, 2011

Carmelo Anthony to Wear Number 7 Instead of Usual Number in New York.

Carmelo Anthony, despite at first reportedly wanting to wear No. 13 with his new team the New York Knicks, will instead wear No. 7, according to multiple sources include Dime Magazine.

It appears he has changed his mind because the No. 13 has been set to be retired by the Knicks, Mark Jackson's former number when he played with the team.

And although Kelenna Azubuike currently wears No. 7, I think he's a bit overruled here by the entire city of New York that just wants to see Anthony happy in the Big Apple.

But if Anthony did opt out of No. 13 because of No. 7, it demonstrates something about 'Melo that we've known all along: a true professional.

Although some Denver Nuggets fans could see him as abandoning the franchise, one, he's entitled to that given what he's done in the league, and two, he did it in a dignified way, not leading the organization on at all and getting them a lot in return.

You can say what you want about Anthony as a player, if he's one of the best to ever play the game, but one thing that's almost inarguable is the way he conducts himself on the court.

He rarely showboats, except in moments of exuberation, he's never looked to grab the spotlight, and he's not a selfish player.

Not every player can win a championship, but legacies can also be built on how you play the game, not on how many rings you have.

If Anthony doesn't win a championship with Amar'e Stoudemire and the Knicks, it would undoubtedly be a disappointment, but Knicks fans should know they're not only getting a star player, but a person that any franchise would love to represent it off-the-court, as well.

Let's go Knicks. That's amare

Yeah, I don't get it either and personally I would rather see Melo in 13 if thats the number he really wants. At the end of the day it doesn't matter but why retire JAX? The Pacers can do that.

If they retire Mark Jacksons number, they need to retire first and foremost, Bernard King... and then Charles Oakley and Allan Houston. They meant just as much to the franchise, if not more, than Jackson... and I'm a big Jackson fan.

And I don't nescessarily think any of those guys should have their numbers retired except MAYBE Bernard King, and that's a huge maybe.

You guys are underestimating Briggs, especially after the Deron Williams trade. Although I guess you're limited to a 2 digit number.

Really, retiring Mark Jackson's jersey is a complete embarrassment. Players like Bernard King and Charles Oakley played here at least as long as Jackson but their impact on the franchise is exponentially higher than Jackson's ever was.

I like Jax but he wasn't a Knick long enough to deserve that honor. The Knicks wouldn't have contended all those years without Oak can't say the same for Mark.
