So piecing together what happened yesterday with what realgm is reporting as credits and debits, I think this is where we are at:

Read more: http://basketball.realgm.com/nba/draft/future_drafts/detailed#ixzz1EhX5bPm5

2011:
1st Rounders: 1: Ours, subject to flipping with Houston. We should be around the same area in terms of picks so not worried about that
2nd Rounders: 0: we traded ours to the lakers. We may be getting one from Minnesota

2012:
1st Rounders: 0: Ours is owned by Houston- New York's own 2012 1st round pick to Houston (top 5 protected in 2012, top 5 protected in 2013, top 5 protected in 2014, and top 5 protected in the 2015 Draft). If Houston does not receive a 1st round pick from New York by the 2015 Draft, then New York will convey their own 2015 2nd round pick and 2016 2nd round pick to Houston. [Houston - New York - Sacramento, 2/18/2010]
2nd rounders: 1 possible: we traded a top 55 protected pick to Phoenix. As long as its in the top 55 we keep it. We just traded our Golden State 2nd rounder to Denver

2013:
1st rounders: 1: Ours, since we couldn't trade it in back to back years
2nd rounders: 1: Ours. We traded away the extra GOlden State one owned

2014:
1st rounders 0: We just traded ours to Denver
2nd rounders 1, possible 2: We have our own, and Sacramento's if its not in the top 55, acquired from Boston

2015:
1st rounders: 1: ours
2nd rounders: 1: ours - we haven't traded these yet.

Here is one thing I just picked up from another article:

Meanwhile, here's Larry Coon with the word on New York's outgoing pick: Here's the story on the draft pick. It'll be the "first available" after NY sends a pick to Houston.

Here is the interpretation: Today, the Knicks trade the 2014 pick to Denver, because we don't have our 2012 and you need a pick every other year. But as soon as the 2012 draft is done, the Knicks will be able to move their 2013 pick because they will have their 2014.

So in essence, the Knicks have their own 2011, 2014.

Still don't really understand it. How can they trade away their 2013 pick if they didn't have a pick in 2012?

This rule is commonly misunderstood.

You can't not have consecutive FUTURE 1st round draft picks. The rule is designed to prevent teams from giving away tons of future picks at one time that would bite then in the ass years later.

So given it's 2011, and the KNicks traded their 2012 pick, they can't trade their 2011 or 2013 pick, because those are all future picks.

But once the 2012 draft occurs, that ceases to be a future pick, and the Knicks would then be eligible to trade their 2013 pick, so long as they had a 2014 pick.

In other words, a team can trade their draft pick every year if they like, they'd just have to do it one at a time, after each draft took place.

Also, as a footnote, the Knicks could still actually trade their 2011 pick, just not officially until AFTER the draft. ON draft night, the KNicks and another team could arrange for the Knicks to select a player of the other team's choice. The Knicks would make the selection and then after the draft, file and complete the trade.

Just to make sure, the 2011 pick is Iman Shumpert right?

I don't understand how we can still trade the 2013 pick, if this years pick *2012* is Houstons, after the draft is complete.
Since Denver owns our 2014 picks already?

Also doesn't Denver also have a swap for another future 1st rounder as well? What year is this pick?

Rockets receive the Knicks' 2012 first-round pick (top 5 protected in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015, if not conveyed by 2015 then the Rockets will receive the Knicks 2015 and 2016 second-round picks) (Tracy McGrady trade 02-18-10)

what I meant to saw was - what happens if we have top 5 protection for those above years to the pick that is supposed to go to Denver?

I mean, the way we're playing basketball right now, we're one Baron Davis slipped disc away from finishing in the bottom of the league, with a good shot at a top five pick.

with the way the season is going we'll probably get the 6th pick and he'll be the Next Michael Jordan

I am setting my sights at this point - full throttle - on 2027

It suppose to be a very deep draft with a bunch of 6 foot 9 poing guards.

Of course, that is only if by then Baron Davis' back is starting to creak.

But we will trade it for Steve Nesh to be our new coach after retiring in the middle of the season due to early signs of alltimers syndrome.
