A person with knowledge of the conversations told CBSSports.com on Saturday that Jazz point guard Deron Williams began informing close associates after last season that if Stoudemire wound up in New York, Williams would follow him there as a free agent in 2012. If the Knicks got Anthony with the three-year extension under current rules, it is not clear whether they'd have enough cap space to add a player such as Williams, Chris Paul or Dwight Howard when the trio become unrestricted free agents after next season

I'd rather have a 1% chance at Deron than have Carmelo

If this is true, it is getting ridiculous if players would announce they are leaving when they have a full year left in their contract. The whole drama it creates and how it affect the teams. They are under contract and should play it out (i.e. Nash said he was under contract and play it out until FA). I don't recall Labron saying he was leaving before his last season in Cleveland.

Here's to the next year and a half of Feron W threads and hing MDA fornot coaching defense, while we trade away every player that he does inspire to play defense. We can't afford three of them on teh team, OK? Not unless they all agree to 20% pay cuts or something. Bron and Wade had tha maturity to see that, and they managed to convince Bosh. But Melo and amare are not coming here for a discount, so forget Deron Williams already.
TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

Dang. Imagine Timo, Amare, Gallo, Fields, Deron with Chandler as 6th man. That would be a title contending team.

probably more accurate to imagine: Timo, Amare, Melo, Fields, Deron, no bench and Isiah being the GM.

How are you signing Deron with 2 max players already signed?

Melo and Amare take up around 40 mil. A max last offseason was 16.5. Thats around 56-57 mil which is right around the limit. Then you have the mid level which we would be lucky to keep fields with. Then there is the lower level exception and bi annual exception I think which we could use to keep another two players and the rest would be minimum deals.

All this crap has me rooting for the owners in the CBA negotiations.

Maybe the anonymous source for all these stories is David Stern?
Giving players bad press to paint them in a bad light in case there's a lockout.

you are assuming there will be a mid level or low level exception.

i believe the owners want to get rid of the mle.

there are MANY unknown variables with a pending lockout this summer.

this is very much a factor why the melo situation has played out the way it has.

it's a much huger risk, imho, to believe the knicks will be able to get williams via free-agency.

It's a risk but it's certainly not impossible. If we have to let go of Fields/trade him for an expiring, then we do it in a heartbeat for Deron. Most of Miami's team are minimum deal role players, no?

By the time Deron Wiliams and Chris Paul are free agents, the CBA will be settled. They won't have to deal with the issue of potentially leaving money on the table.

What that means is unlike Anthony, they'll have FULL leverage over Utah, and New Orleans respectively. They can pick and choose who to be traded to and if they don't get their wish, go to free agency secure they won't be losing a dime.

Then you take at look at both teams rosters and payroll. Both teams, if faced with the prospect of losing their franchise players, will have no choice to go into full rebuilding mode.

If either or both are determined to leave, they will be traded. The game then becomes who can either offer a bounty of young talent or draft picks and can get the player to agree to an extension, OR... who's got the expirings to take back another contract or 2.

New Orleans, for one, I'm fairly convinced, will want to unload Okafor. The leader will be who's got the expirings to take back both Paul and Okafor and still have a young piece or two and a pick or two.

I admire Deron's competitiveness, but the Sloan situation has me leery. Is Does Williams have the personality to blend in with a team that has established stars and a strong, if not stubborn, head coach.

It will be fun knowing either Paul or Williams should fall to us next year. I don't care which one, just get one.
