James Dolan met with Carmelo Anthony late Thursday in Los Angeles, The Daily News has learned, in what could be the first step in Anthony being traded to the Knicks.

Although the Nets and Nuggets have agreed on players that would be included in a proposed blockbuster trade, the Knicks and Nuggets are scheduled to hold a conference call on Friday afternoon, a high ranking Knicks official tells The News.

The four main players on the conference call will be Dolan, the Chairman of Madison Square Garden, as well as Knicks president Donnie Walsh. Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke and Nuggets general manager Masai Ujiri will also be on the call.

The call indicates that the Knicks are definitely alive in their bid to acquire Anthony and that if both sides can agree on which players to trade a deal can be made.

The hold up is the Knicks reluctance to include Danilo Gallinari in the trade. The Nuggets want three starters, including Raymond Felton, a No. 1 pick and Eddy Curry's expiring contract.

The Knicks would get Anthony, Chauncey Billups plus other players to make the deal work under the salary cap guidelines, including Anthony Carter.

Anthony said Friday that he isn't aware of a meeting with Prokhorov. In all likelihood, Anthony is hoping that the Knicks and Nuggets can agree on a deal before he meets with Nets officials, including Mikhail Prokhorov, the team owner, as well as minority owner Jay-Z.

They asked Melo about meeting the Knicks, and he said "he'd look forward to meeting with 'Mr. Dolan' if a meeting is set up." Either these recent reports of a meeting are false or Melo is playing poker.

Here is my take.

If Dolan met with Melo, and if this conference call goes down, it means Denver has/had given NY permission to talk to its player; that should be clear to all of us.

But why would they do it? Either they WANT to or HAVE to cause they know their hand is forced. They have now conceded that NY is Melo's only destination (besides Denver).

If they thought that Melo would sign with NJ, they would have pressed Melo to talk with Prokov and gotten that deal done, which is probably more to their liking, but that hasn't happened.

If they thought Melo would blink about not getting the $65M extension, they should just sit back and wait until summer and 30 June deadline comes to pass and feel comfortable that Melo wouldn't opt out, but that isn't happening either.

So, let NY chat with Melo and hope that both sides feel pressure from each other (NY and Melo team) in the hopes that they (Denver) can press 1 more or many more assets out of NY. Also, NY and Melo have to chat to work out the details of the extension to their liking.

It's now up to Dolan, Donnie, Melo to hold tight for a few more days and not give in to the idea of making a deal just to get the deal done, but rather getting the deal done on their terms.

i still don't go beyond Curry, Chandler and AR (or pick). maybe i throw in Turiaf.

Denver has no leverage. and barely mentioned in all of this is that Melo contract does not expire this Summer. he has an opt out. if he fears the CBA or he doesn't want to sign long-term with Denver or any of their approved trade partners -- then he can just decide not to opt out. he gets another $18M and Denver is forced to go through this all again.

Denver has no leverage. NONE.

My guess is that the deal will be Chan, Fields, Felton, Curry, AR/pick for Melo, Billups and Carter. OR the Knicks might actually try to get Nene from Denver. That could help Denver too and solve our need for another big.

I'm taking the more pessimistic view on this one.

I think Denver is going to make a show of *TRYING* to get a deal done with the Knicks, but have it blow up. Then they'll say, "Melo, we've still got the Nets at the table - will you meet with them?"

I don't think Denver will negotiate in good faith with the Knicks until the Nets offer is truly done.

what stops melo from saying, "i won't sign with jersey. and i won't sign an extension. and i won't opt-out. so pay me my $18M." ???

that would be the most painful possible solution of all-time for everyone.

i think denver would be okay with having him in the fold for another year and a half though... and i'm sure his owner would try like heck to get the franchise tag added to the new CBA.

if melo wants to leave, now is the time to do it.

There were reports out there Billups does not want to come to NY or NJ and would force his hand to Miami. The Billups/Felton part of this is way too complicated.

My offer: Chandler, Curry, AR, AZ, Turiaf, Mason, picks and 3 mil for Anthony and Nene

Never heard the Miami part. And I think Billups only wanted to force his hand when it involved NJ.

We already tried Chandler, Curry and a pick (AR) and was turned down for bidding too low. Denver bidded too high when thay asked for half the team. We need to meet somewhere in the middle where both teams begrudgingly give a little to satisfy the other team but no so much themseleves.

With that said one of Gallo or Fields has to go, along with Chadler, Curry and AR or pick. I believe thats a fair deal for an allstar talent like Melo.

Guys the Knicks are gonna allow Denver to save face, so don't expect any crazy lopsided deals either way. It'll be one less than Denver asked for. No way they give them 3 starters. Denver will be able to still look like they made the best deal possible under the circumstances. Dolan is involved so he's gonna make SURE that the deal gets done.

Billups is no fool. He realizes that the NY situation would be great for his career too. He's said he wants to play another 4 years and what better place than NY with Melo and Amar'e to do it?

No way Denver signs off on that. Chandler and Curry walk in the summer, AZ is damaged goods, Mason is the 11th man on a 500. team and for the hell of it, the Nuggs are gonna throw in their starting center? Come on guys. I know we are Knick fans here, but we are not fleecing anyone for an allstar. We have to give to get.

Not sold on Felton for Billups. Nothing against CB but he is much older and the chemistry on the team would be destroyed. Felton has been solid for us.

The only guys I care to keep are Stat, Felton and Fields. Everybody else can go.
