IBM's Watson Wins Jeopardy! Next Up: Fixing Health Care

"The final round in the epic man vs. machine battle that's been playing out on Jeopardy! all week was fought tonight. The winner: Watson, IBM's supercomputer, who soundly defeated flesh-and-blood opponents Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, ending a three-night tournament and beginning a long period of social and technological commentators trying to figure out what it all meant."

I vote for IBM's Watson to replace James Dolan...

Watson was dominant. I only watched for 15 minutes last night but he just controlled things.

Skynet is definitely on the way - the Internet will be the way the computers communicate an it's only a matter of time before they become self aware.

Watson has more knowledge in 1 KB than James Dolan has as a whole.

This is a very big deal. My wife and I watch jeopardy nightly and she kept saying, "what's the big deal w/ Watson.?" She finally understood that having a computer that can reason is pretty amazing and has profound implications when we start thinking of robots and such. How many years do we have before CP3O is a reality???

Good question - a decade, maybe two at most. Personally I am not a big fan of the idea - we are all connected to technology way too much and are losing out on the real meaning of life. Not to mention the beauty of the planet we are trashing to build all of this crap.

It's C-3PO, first, and how far are we from him? I think we're past him. He was a junk robot, man, remember those sand people bought him off the watermelon truck? Come on.

You bring up a great point - dont you just love how sci fi movies take the tech of the time the movie was made and put it into the future with a little twist on it to make it seem cool? When you go back and watch Star Wars or Aliens you can see that the future is still totally 70's/80's.

My PS3 is smarter than C-3P0

CP30 - woops, had CP3 on the mind.

either way, the world of robots who can reason, deduce, and ultimately carry on conversations in real-time is not far off. As soon as they can shrink all that processing technology into a nano-tube or something....
