Just another reason that Donnie needs to find common ground on this deal and pull the trigger quickly...

Denver wants Chauncey for Felton to be a part of the trade. They need to get younger for their coming rebuild. Chauncey makes a lot of money... makes sense for them right?

Now let me put some of the concerns of Knick fans to rest.

If we do this deal, we'll be sitting there in the Summer, probably having flamed out after a dramatic 2nd round flame out at the hands of the Heat. We'll have given away half of our prospects and Briggs will be in full NBA-Draft evaluation mode.

We'll be sitting pretty with one of the most valuable trade assets in the league that nobody is talking about in the fog of the 'Melo drama.

Chauncey's 2011-12 salary is at $14,200,000, but we can buy him out for about $4,000,000. There will definitely be teams that will give a lot for that piece of paper. Look at what Dallas did with Dampier's voidable contract. They sent Damp and a bag of balls to Charlotte for Tyson Chandler, who is now making them one of the top teams in the league.

Donnie, if we can cut it down to one pick (through trading AR), Felton and one of our wings, let's pull that trigger. If we need to take Balkman to make it work, great. Do it. This deal is not as bad as is being perceived.

This is true.

The other part is this: what's the timing of the buyout and how does the potential CBA lockout effect buyout?

If buyout has to be done by say 30 June, it becomes almost useless.

well, here is the language:

Billups, a Denver native and hometown hero, is making $13.5 million this season and is due to make $14.2 million next season. However, the Nuggets, or whichever team might trade for Billups, can buy out his contract five days after the conclusion of the team's season for $3.7 million.

So that means his contract buyout is kinda useless for the Knicks.

If there's a lockout, don't we want to make a run this year anyway? So that's a non-factor to me. We'll feel dumb if we play it slow and steady and then next season is canceled.

If we have Melo and Amare, a PG will come here in 2011/12 just to play with them on a bargain deal.

We could use that Billups deal to trade for a PG. Or we could draft one like Selby.

Billups IMO is likely to want to stay on with the Knicks for a while. He's said that he wants play another 4 yrs. Kidd is like 38 and Billups could stick around that long. He's in great shape and by then we'll likely have found a young PG to take away a bulk of the minutes. I actually see this as a net positive for the team and making it less of a panic about the PG position. Billups plays a very efficient style and doesn't beat up his body like many PG's do. He could probably maintain this level for a good while. It's not like he'd have to carry the action with STAT and MELO.

So the contract has to be bought out before the trade season starts is basically what you're saying?

correct. Basically it means move him before 24 Feb or lose him for $3.7M (if you want cost savings).

I've had time to think this offer out. This trade isn't as bad as first thought, providing we can keep fields.
our big 3 come playoff time would be Amare, Melo, and Billups. That's pretty decent, I think in all the hoopla i forgot how good Billups was and kinda still is. He has a ring, was part of a good Piston Team, so he knows how to win and can hit big shots. That would be 3 scorers\veterans, plus he expires in a year anyway. Keep Fields and send the others packing. I agree, Billups might just be the hidden asset.
Love Feltons style and happy for his progress but with those 3, I'm thinking we could make noise in the playoffs. Am I wrong?
Miami and Boston can't shut all 3 of them down vs. just shutting down Stat.
Perhaps we need to look at it like Boston did and go all in. Win/Win.

You don't buy out Billips, you trade his expiring as part of a package for Deron, CP3, Howard, etc.

If for no other reason, this is why DW will not trade all our "assets", we may need them for Stud #3.

If I am Utah, NO, ORL, what does an expiring Billups do for me? Does it really hold value?

I think with Utah and NO, they would want players, cause they don't really have pull for free agents.

Small market teams always need salary reductions to get under the luxury tax unless they're absolutely certain they can fill the arena, which will be very doubtful, unless they are taking back another superstar, which is rare. You can bet they'll want a package that sheds salaries while adding youth/bargains.

Well, if that's the case, and I were Donnie, I'd try to bring in another team to flip Billups to this year to bring back a player on a longer deal.

What packages could we build for a player or group of players from a team that's not in the playoff run with around $13M in salary?

I'd hate to lose Felton but he's not the long term solution at PG. If he were he'd be signed beyond 2 years. He's a stop gap for the Knicks to make a run a CP3 and/or Williams. I like Billups a lot. He's older but his nickname is Big Shot Bob for a reason.

Chauncey may have more value as a trade chip. He is not a more valuable player though

Why worry about small things like a PG?

Andy Rautins is all ready to step up to the plate.

as long as I don't have to watch Toney Douglas run the point for 25-30 MPG

I would say the same, but where's Gallo going to play? 2 guard?

Billups/Gallo/Melo/Amare/Moz or Barron

Gallo's been guarding 2's in spots, but I think that's a lot to ask if teams can game plan for it.

Back to Mr Big Shot. Could you flip him to Detroit for Ben Gordon's remaining three years and Terrico White?
