Shawne doesn't usually play good defense, but last night he did a pretty damn good job giving that he was Iso'd on bron a number of times and had no help behind him on some plays.

That may be the first time I've ever heard a coach talk about defense based on the premise of standing around. "You stand here, you stand there, hey you, you should be standing closer to the lane...we got one guy patrolling...maybe one guy pressuring the ball, provided I'm not running him into the ground during the rest of the game...yeah, we got to work on that..."

3 clips that showed how an offense can break down and make stupid mistakes, not great defense.

And here I thought you played defense by moving your legs, not standing in place...

Dude. You play defense by moving your legs when you are the primary defender and MDA said that much. Defender standing on the lane creates obstacles for the offensive player and gives him less options. His defense basically is based on making the offensive take what you give him so the defensive players can make the play. This scheme is like a man-to-man-hybrid-zone.

So perfect defense would therefore be one active guy and four chairs... or maybe 4 traffic cones... Dude, any coach I've ever had would skin me alive for standing still on defense, unless my legs were broken... And even then, he'd at least want my hands up and moving... watch the clips; the ref could be playing defense for us...

I'm just sayin...

So what are you suppose to do when the player you are guarding does not have the ball and is standing still? Unless the player makes a cut then you move. His defense has the primary defender moving his feet. The secondary defender stunts by moving his feet and getting to the ball handlers pass and then he wants them to recover to their man. The other defenders moves to the area of the floor that gives no options for the offense(this is the zone part).

Okay, okay, you win; so if your man is standing still, you have to stand still. Makes perfect sense. I've seen the light.

Gallo and Williams' legs never stopped moving. They always had a hand up and kept pressure on the ball. That D was solid as can be expected against the best player in the league. There was also terrific switching going on last night. Even Felton got stuck on Lebron once or twice and made him struggle. Active hands and feet work wonders on defense, no matter the matchup.

He is explaining how to play a zone defense. The only thing exciting about it is that he is acknowledging that part of the game. I wish he had a segment on his show where fans could pick the clips and he could break down what happened on defense.

The way I saw it he is not explaining zone defense. I think he is saying where the players that are not defending the man with the ball should be in order to help their teammate in case he isn't fast enough to stop the man with the ball, at the same time be able to stop any possible passes he can make, and take control of what happens in the paint so there aren't any easy shots. He is not saying that players have to be static in that position. He is saying that seeing how the other team players are covering the floor they should be there, and when the man with the ball dribbles in any a direction they have to move accordingly so he can't get an easy layup or shot. Some of those movements include going towards him as if you are gonna stop him so he hesitates and then go back to your man (so his his defender can get back in position), and others are just for covering the paint and showing him that if he goes to the rim they are gonna be there to block his shot. So it is good positioning like martin said.

At least that is what I understood of it.
