Azubuike's deal is 80% covered by insurance if he doesn't play by the 41st game, which is tommorow's game vs. Houston. So basically trading is Azubuike is like giving a team $2.6 mil for a first round pick, which for late first rounders we see all the time so that teams can avoid the luxury tax.

If he's not gonna play this year or not be 100% effective, seems like this would be the right thing to do for the Knicks and probably one of the ways Donnie believes he can acquire multiple first round picks.

Definately.

Two picks give us leverage in any potential Melo deals or to help land a solid big.

Smart concept. Who has a bad $3 mil deal out there we can eat?
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Carl Landry on Sacramento - $3 mil expiring contract and has told them that he will not be re-signing with them.

Really smart dealing if we do something like this. Donnie seems to have a lot of cards up his sleeve to play as needed.

Yup. I expect a second rounder, some cash and Azu for Carl would be the offer.

Sounds ok, but carl is a Under size big, who rebounds ok and has a little jumper, he doesn't really make us much better. Walsh wants (if he decides to make a trade) a significant upgrade, he's not going to tinker with this line up, unless they start to collapse.

1st rounders add to payroll. small but that leaves less room for a bigger contract.

I would rejoice at this trade. This would be a perfect trade for the knicks.

Would you rather rent Landry for 35 games or get a late first rounder that you can control on a modest contract for the next few years?

Under most circumstances, we should be sellers and not buyers. I want the pick. But more likely than not this type of deal happens to get a pick that's re-routed to Denver in a Melo deal

Landry will probably be headed to Houston...possibly for Patrick Patterson. He wants to go back to the Rockets

That depends. First we need to get Melo in a reasonable trade without giving up too much. If we can do that without losing Azubuike, then having him be part of a trade for someone like Carl Landry would be an excellent option. As many have already stated, even if we get Melo, we still need another player/rebounder at C or PF. This would fill 2 needs and we would be able to compete against any team in the league THIS YEAR!

From the Bergen Record today:

Because Kelenna Azubuike, the guard acquired in the David Lee deal who’s still recovering from 2009 patellar-tendon surgery, did not play in the final game of the season’s first half, 80 percent of his $3.3 million salary now is picked up by insurance.

And since his contract is up after this season, that makes him attractive as a trade chip, even if he doesn’t play.

Trade Azubuike for a first rounder?
