If you're Donnie, do you a) go the star route and add 'Melo before the deadline for valuable assets (including at least one of Gallo/Chandler/Fields) or b) add strategic pieces including Camby, maybe a Fernandez for the bench, and a Ridnour. Championship the goal.
Go all-in on 'Melo
Add to the existing core with some combo of Camby, Fernandez, Ridnour, etc.

I think the current team would be scary good if you add Camby, a good b/u PG like Ridnour, and someone like Rudy F for the bench. Camby then teaches Moz, Felton gets more rest, and our second unit can star with auto offense. And we hang onto our existing starting five.
The new new core: Randle, RJ, IQ. Maybe Mitch. Future pick. Future trade. Future FA.

However, do we really need to "go all-in" on 'Melo? He might just fall into our laps..

What you said would make the existing team better, for certain. But is it really a championship caliber squad? I don't know. So I'd rather just hold onto the cap space if Melo is available during free agency

right... even if it isn't Melo, I think someone will fall into our laps. Camby is a great complimentary piece but I think the Knicks do need one more guy that the other team has to gameplan for

Might be on to something. Not the biggest fan of Melo's style of play but we don't want to do what a lot of GMs do and make the mistake of handing long term contracts to solid but not spectacular role players.

Terrible:

Doing what Detroit did in giving big $ to Charlie V and Ben Gordon when they're not THAT much better than guys the Pistons already have.

Doing what Philly did and giving out big deals to Dalembert

Exactly. A scenario where we get both is very unlikely (if not impossible. If given the choice I'd go the Miami Heat way and grab Carmelo.
This has been said before on this forum- once you establish your core of stars, role players will flock to the team for lesser contracts. Worry about the pillars, not the whole.

question is - does melo become more than who he currently is playing under the inspiration of amear? if yes, then he's worth a max. if he stays the same player - then i say he's not worth it.

Haven't gotten a chance to watch him play over a full game but he certainly has potential.

Camby right now though I would think has an edge in terms of just court awareness, veteran trickery/savvy. Realistically...what do you think Jordan commands on the open market?

This lockout/CBA thing has gotta be screwing with lots of GMs in terms of planning for the next season.

its a tough call for dw, if we get melo it would gut the team most likely and we would essentially have to start from scratch when this team looks so close now. On the other hand what team or its fans in the league would pass up on rebuilding with STAT, melo, and felton, i think either way you cant go wrong

Centers we can go after this summer include: Nene, Marc Gasol or Deandre Jordan.

if we are able to get gasol next year and keep turiaf/mosgov on the bench it would alleviate our size problem, that sounds like a great plan b along with some back up pg.

i tend to agree w/u... but regardless, DW has pretty much made it clear he's not gonna go "all-in" on Melo... if he can't get him for a trade where we're not gutting our roster, then he'll just wait for him to turn FA this summer... i have to believe that's been the plan since the very beginning & the Knicks are hoping Melo buys into that plan as well... either way we're looking at losing either Wilson or Gallo in the process if DW plans on getting Melo here at some point.

i disagree... look at D Jordan's progression as a player over his 3 years in the NBA, he has improved absolutely nothing in his game other than FT shooting, & he's still shooting under 50% in that aspect of his game... personally i think Jordan tops out as a Brendan Haywood/Erick Dampier type player in the NBA... definitely a solid NBA calibre C, but he will never be the defensive star that Camby is & has been over his NBA career IMHO.

I don't like camby too old.

I don't like Melo at almost 22 mil a year + whatever we have to give up. If you get him I still don't think we have the defense, rebounding or depth to be a contender and you don't have the assets or cap space to get it. To me at a minimum if we sign another max player he has to be a two way player ideally a big. If Dwight Howard were available I'd go all in.

I'd go for the best young big we could get and whatever help we could get for the bench (especially at pg.) I haven't seen enough of the guys who are available to have an opinion on who that is.

I think there is no question he does. Look at his career arc. He improved tremendously from when he arrived in the league. He's super clutch, plays hard and wants to win.

If he just wanted the money and to be in the NY area he would go to NJ> He wants the money, and he should, but he wants to win too. All this talk about Chandler being 90% of Melo is bull****. Melo is a star for a reason and his presence here will be a big ****ing deal. Same way Amare's was/is.

I think Camby is too old for what we are trying to do. We are trying to build a team that can compete for the next 4 or 5 years so I would prefer a younger guy that can be there for the long haul. CAmby would be a great pickup after that person is aquired.
I just hope that people will like me
