The centerpiece for the Melo/Nets trade is PF Derrick Favors. Does he really have the potential to be THAT good....and if so, WTF are the Nets doing giving him up for Melo? Do they really think they will have a better team with Melo, CP3 and Lopez then Harris, Favors and Lopez? Course, the whole premise of this Nets deal is that they think they can convince Melo that they will sign CP3 in 2012 and open the 2012/13 season in Bklyn.....yeah, i dunno....how can they promise that? *edit* well CP3 over Harris is a no brainer...but still....can that team beat Miami?

Draftnet profile:
NBA Comparison: Al Horford
Strengths: Explosive athlete with unique combination of power and quickness ... Possesses an extraordinary wingspan, with Georgia Tech official website claiming a 9-1 standing reach ... Tremendous leaping ability ... Frequent target of the alley-oop pass and seemingly nothing is out of reach. Soft hands allow him to corral passes most bigs would muff ... Runs the floor like a gazelle showing great speed from baseline to baseline ... Finishes with power around the rim - a dunking machine ... Has made dramatic advancements in his post game repertoire and footwork ... Features a drop step into the lane for a mini right hook and quick spins to either side of the floor ... Cat quick in the post. Displays a deft touch with his left hand around the basket, almost inclined to use his off hand ... Has a nice looking stroke out to 12-15 feet, but does not appear overly comfortable ... Appears relaxed at the free throw line shooting 73% early on ... An absolute vacuum on both the offensive and defensive backboards. Averaging 8.3 rebounds through his first seven collegiate games in 24 minutes of action (4.4 def and 3.9 off) ... A shot blocking menace (5 per game as a HS senior and 2 per game early this season) ... Alters countless other attempts ... His mere presence makes opponents think twice before driving inside ... Not a boastful personality, but rather allows his game to do the talking ... Excellent student and quick learner.

Weaknesses: Has done a good job adding bulk to his frame, but needs to continue to get stronger ... Needs to increase trajectory on his jumper and increasing his range would be beneficial ... Ball handling is decent for a big, but must be improved to augment his face up game ... Continued advancement of his footwork and comfort level in the post ... Seems to predetermine moves rather than reacting to the defense ... Does not handle double teams well ... Needs to slow the game down and not panic ... Not a great passer out of the post. Has relied heavily on his athletic gifts up to this stage against inferior competition ... Needs to work harder and understand court positioning ... Can be lazy at times defensively and on the boards depending on his length and leaping ability ... Stands too upright and his lateral movement is sloppy ... His conditioning has been questioned, often tiring in the latter stages of games.

I dont see him being a superstar but he could be solid if he continues to work on his game.

Hard to tell with some of these guys.

I watched a lot of Georgia Tech basketball with an alum last year. The physical gifts are there and Favors may become very good but, honestly, I wasn't impresed. Reminded me of Marvin Williams at UNC where you could see what he could become if he could put it all together. Who knows if Favors put sit all together though which is why you trade him for Melo. Anyway, I liked Lawal more on that GA Tech team.

On ESPN radio, word around the league is that most GM's are really not that high on his talent and don't see him as having Star potential.... For what that's worth..

What he is already is a good rebounder and an efficient scorer who should develop into a very good defensive player. I wouldn't expect him to put up big offensive numbers.

My brother-in-law lives in Atlanta and got to see him as a high school player a few times. He said he couldn't believe the things that he could do at that level and that he had never seen a guy that good in high school. I also have heard people compare him to Shawn Kemp. I think he is worth the risk for Denver.

And to add to that, the Nets coach (Avery Johnson) has to motivate the guy to play hard. That is a really bad sign. Have seen that too many times before with talented players.

I think they must be planning on doing a total rebuild if they dump Billups and Melo. I know Martin's huge contract is up at the end of the season. Cap space and draft picks have served some teams pretty well in the past.

I don't think you get over losing a superstar very quickly. They are trying to make the best of it. This is probably Karl's last year as well.

I live in Atlanta as well, I saw favors in HS as well as guys like josh smith on that same level.. and favors didn't seem to have any more talent than guys like josh and dwight... But then again, me and my buddies used to watch a lot of HS basketball...

they don't look to have much left after this season to draw F.A's with...atleast not any that want to win...much like the nets came up short.....becoming the Nets west is hardly an upgrade either...maybe they can hit it out of the park with Favors...but he could be overhyped also...they won't have good leadership shipping out their team leaders and the draft looks weak.....maybe they have a plan and I'm not seeing it....could be a long road for them...their management team is hardly making a good impression with how they are handling things...

Donnie had a 2 year plan...targeted a strong FA class...upgraded the roster by buying late round picks....shed salary, but still tried to remain competitive...managed the fans/media by being open about his plan...and showed patience and huge cajones in the face of criticism and quick fixes and dealing with his RFA's....these guys might learn a few things from the old master....hope it works out for them...to bad they won't return the old man's phone calls

Its really hard to tell when watching high school BB. I remember watching Tim Thomas in high school and he looked like a future 10X allstar and first ballot hall of famer. He was by far the best HS player I've ever seen in person. I mean, it was a man against boys out there, really. At the end of the day, all of these guys are super talented but it comes down to heart and confidence.

OT: Derrick Favors, is he that good?
