Amare, the prototypical D'Antoni center, is a mismatch waiting to happen because of his freakish physical talents. I have tried to summarize those talents in the word "SPIT". Speed allows Amare to get past other centers and drive to the basket while also allowing him to run the floor like a deer. Power allows Amare get inside even when double teamed and still find a way dunk. It also affects his ability to rebound and defend in the paint. IQ relates to his passing ability, and also knowing where to be on the floor. Lastly, Touch indicates how well Amare shoots from the outside. On a scale of one to 9, I rate Amare at 36, a perfect score for the prototype D'Antoni center.

Now I am going to grade Nene against Amare's standard. I give him 8 for speed, 9 for power, 7 for IQ and 7 for Touch. I'll bet Nene isn't spending a lot of time working on his outside shooting. so the fact that he shoots slightly higher than Amare shoots from the foul line (.772% for Amare and 786% for Nene) and also has a significantly higher shooting percentage of .626 versus Amare's .521% indicates that he has to potential to be a good outside shooter if he invests the time to make it happen. (Clearly Amare is shooting more shots away from the basket, than Nene, so ultimately this is a guesstimate based on Nene's potential to improve from the outside.) I also think Nene doesn't get the most from his body. He can learn a great deal hanging arround Amare and Mike D'Antoni.

Anyone else know a center with a high "SPIT" score that they think exceeds Nene's score? If you think I have rated Nene inaccurately I will enthusiastically welcome your corrections.

Yes, you are right that is the prototypical D'Antoni center. Playing a PF at center. He has no use for a conventional center and that is why the Knicks are not that great at stopping the opposing teams bigs.

If Moz could rebound and get his confidence back... he would be an ideal D'Antoni center.

Unfortunately he can't and he doesn't.

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Good point, it wasn't that long ago we were getting abused by bigger teams. Nothing wrong with putting Stat at center when they go small though. It is effective.

So what we are talking about is having two power forwards playing at the 4 and the 5. That becomes particularly helpful when Amare is on the bench resting, and our offense continues to function well. It also makes it more difficult to double Amare when the other power forward is also a significant threat to score as well.

C, PF, who cares as long as the guy can rebound and play post defense without help.

You put KT in his prime next to Amare, and there is no better match.

How many C are even out there that can overpower a strong PF like KT these days? I can't think of one guy that KT would not be able to guard one on one. The big bruising guys are extinct.

A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

McGee would ride the pine just like Moz, Milicic, AR on the Knicks. That is why Blatche is the better player for MDA system. He has range on his shot can help spread the floor away from Amare and he is 6'11 250 skilled player that would excel in MDA system.
