Out of Melo, C. Paul, D. Williams, or D. Howard..Knicks should use 2nd max contract on Dwight Howard.
Don't see Orlando beating the Heat or Celtics in the next couple years, so Howard will look to leave.

I would rather re-sign Chandler who is 3 years younger than Melo. Re-sign Felton who expires in 2012 but we retain his Bird rights. Fields & Gallo will get raises but we have Ronny's & Felton's $ coming off the cap. Also assume we'd trade AR this year for a player like Camby that will expire for 2012. Our young guys now will only improve. We'd be championship contenders.

Pg: Felton
Sg: Fields
Sf: Chandler
Pf: Amare
C: Howard

6th: Gallo
7th: Douglas
8th: MLE
9th: LLE

He's not a good fit for Amare and he's not a freeagent anyway. Are you thinking we wait 2 more years to contend?

I don't see it happening but I think Howard would be a great fit. We lack size, rebounding and defense - he addresses all those needs.

opt out after next year. Just like CP3 and Deron Williams.

I don't think there is a way for us to keep players like Chandler and still be able to go after Howard, unless we are signing them cheap.

I suspect that any practical 2nd max player has to come near term, with Eddy's contract coming off. Otherwise, we have to start renouncing players like Gallo & Felton.

signing Howard as an UFA like Amare 2 summers from now would be impossible, but if you think of it in terms of a sign and trade ala Shaq to Miami (or was it Orlando to LA?), they there is always a possibility. Obviously Howard would have to instigate.

I think this is a real possibility, although a stretch by any means. Howard is alway craving the spotlight and he is not getting that as he would in NY. And if his team struggles over the next year and a half and he still craves the Finals (and attention), and knowing what Miami has got going on in with their big 3, why not NY (or realistically LA).

Why are we talking about two years from now?

You've got a superstar player with knee issues. We should just be patient? I think you'd better be contending by next year at the latest because Amare's knees are bound to be an issue in the back end of his contract.

I think you are right about one thing--completely hold off trading for C Anthony. Moving Amare to PF and Gallo to 6th man was the right move. Now we need a C and stronger 7-9 in the rotation.

I think the main thing we need to do is play up Turriaf so he opts out and get rid of cap space for players who can help us now. We should haev a plan in place to help us win now--we are good enough and have enough assets to find a quality guy or two in ending contracts--and then get the full force of cap space we can utilize to retain Chandler and bring in an elite C prospect. Of course Caremlo can be in the mix--but I am unconvinced that he is what we need. I had my one fleeting moment of we need carmelo but my sense came back to me 1/2 hour later. What we need is 12 points 12 rebounds 3.5 blocks 65% and dominating defense from the 5.

Out of those 4 players, I'd rank Melo a distant fourth.

The thing about waiting is that Howard may want to stay home for personal/family reasons or want to sign with another team. Same with Williams. Regarding Paul, he and Felton are both too short to play together. Paul's the better player, but does have knee issues.

Dwight Howard would only help Amare. Amare can go to power forward and concentrate on scoring and weak side shot blocking. Howard will take care of the the rebounding and interior D. With Amare's jumper and Howard's low post game we'd be unstoppable. I honestly think Amare & Melo are redundant and Dwight greatly help the wear & tear on Amare.

Bring Camby in the meantime, who is exactly the player we need now. Howard is the player we need for the future. Pat Ewing is his mentor & coach. Why not come to NY and become the next great center for NY.

+1. Not sure we could make it happen if we didn't have cap room for a max FA, though, an we won't have that cap room if we re-sign Wilson. It would have to be through a sign and trade and Howard or Paul or Deron would have to force the trade.

I'm stunned that any of you would be willing to just be the Atlanta Hawks for two years while we wait to add talent.

The Atlanta Hawks is better than being the Clippers, which is what we were the last 8 years.
I don't think anyone is saying they PREFER to wait 2 years. If there is a better way to become elite sooner, of course, you do it.
I guess the difference lies in what people believe it will take to be elite.
Some people say Melo is it, and others say no. If not, then who's it gonna take?

I think you have to take into account that Amare's knees have an odometer on them as well as the CBA.

There could be a lockout that changes everything.

I'd go for it this year if there's a shot to do a trade that brings you Camby and Sessions. Those aren't unreasonable trades to do and I believe you could contend for a title with those additions.

TD for Maynor, AR for Larry Sanders, have those two come off the bench to replay their VCU show.

I don't think you have to make the Melo trade to contend. We lead the league in scoring. You have to keep the scoring where it is while improving the depth/defense/rebounding.

if u guys wanna sniff a chance at guys like Dwight Howard or Deron Williams, u should be in favor of getting Melo now... there's no way their teams are gonna let them walk for nothing as free agents & i highly doubt they're gonna pull a Lebron James on their franchises... having top level talent to offer up in a trade gives u a much better chance to land guys like that unless you happen to have multiple lottery picks, which we don't.
