A lot of us were saying back in early Dec., after the pattycake part of our schedule was over, that the next 25 games would be more revealing about where we stand. Here's what the first 10 of those 25 produced:
5-5. A great home win against the Spurs, good home wins against the Nuggets, Bulls & Thunder, an expected, pedestrian home win against the Pacers.
Home and away losses to Miami, home loss to celts, road loss to magic and road loss to cavs.
All in all, very good showing, IMO. 1-3 against the elites, 4-1 against very good teams, and 1 overtime stinker against a weak team.
I'm still in no rush for Donnie to start dealing, and I hope he isn't either, but what this stretch of tough games tells me so far is that we're pretty close and need tinkering not full-scale remodeling.
What's also been interesting is how obvious our deficiencies have been, in both the wins and losses. We badly need someone who can consistently defend and rebound against bigs, and our bench might be the worst in the NBA. On the other hand, our offense has been usually been very good, even in came closing situations. And our defense can be pretty good too (deficiencies aside) for short burts.
In sum, I want a good center who can defend and rebound and isn't an offensive liability -- Nene, Kamen, Camby are my favorites -- and a backup point. But I don't want to give up any core pieces to get either, so if it means waiting until the offseason to address our weaknesses, I can live with that.
