Switching from MAC to LINUX- any thoughts?

Hi UK whizzez
My 10 year old MAC on Tiger is too slow- and instead of getting a new MAC or Windows I thought I'd try a Linux system- any thoughts? Can I move my old files (Itunes, JPEGs of Marv) over to a Linux system? I heard it's fast and updates are free- I don't need the Mac toys- Just wondering what you all might know- I don't do much online other than streaming BBall games or using the web.

that's a big old leap - one very user friendly, one very techie oriented. My guess is that if you need to ask you prob shouldn't do it

I agree with cheers regarding Ubuntu. It is the easiest linux distro out there. Overall, linux is very secure and everything is free. Migrating your data over is no problem. Copying images will be very simple. Copy to a USB drive plug into your linux box and copy them back. Your music library files will have to be moved over as individual files. iTunes does not run on linux, just use a different music management app. It will always be a little rough when you switch platforms, eg: pc to mac, mac to linux etc but once you iron out those issues you will be fine.

I'm going to do it- Martin- if I could get that light-up cup to work I'm sure Ubuntu will be cool too-

Impressive leap - I just switched from Windows to Mac last year (wasn't hard at all). I think Linux is a much bigger jump.

If you are technically inclined (which you must be if you are considering it) then you will be fine.

I like how cheap I can get a computer for(really cheap if I get it preinstalled w Linux and no Windows), how fast it runs, and how the upgrades are free, and it gets fewer viruses than Windows or Mac.

Are you building the rig yourself or buying it from dell or some other manufacturer?

I've been telling you people on UK about Ubuntu for at least 1.5 years now, and now finally we see that I am the man. So go ahead and google my ubuntu/linux advice from, like, early 2009, when I was drinking heavily but I never dropped the ball on what's the good dope fresh.

This is the best advise. I for one has switched to Fedora for my development machine but I would not suggest it to casual users. For one not all apps needed in many web sites does not work in Linux.

Also, if you are building your own machine. It would be wise to check if the peripherals you purchase is supported by the Linux flavor you are planning to install.

I'm planning on buying a low price pre-installed netbook and getting a big monitor later
