He did. The Knicks held back-to-back picks at 38 and 39 and chose Syracuse favorite Andy Rautins first for public-relations reasons.

Is this just Berman nonsense or is there something to this?

are fans in Syracuse delighted that we took him w/the 38th pick instead of the 39th? i don't get the PR angle.

Come on people! Rautins was a NAME and the fans knew exactly who he was and liked him. Fields going 1st could've caused the fans to boo and get bent out of shape. By puttin Fields 2nd it softened the blow. Move on People! Nothing to see here!

that would seem to explain it, but didn't the MSG fans boo the Rautins pick too?

this clip doesn't show if the Rautins pick got booed or not, but it clearly shows Landry Fields got booed, so the whole PR thing to soften the blow clearly didn't work if that was their line of thinking. (btw, Jay Bilas' assessment of Landry Fields was pretty dead on)

They boo everything anyway, what's the point of PR moves. And who cares if they boo or not? There's no sense in making a PR pick. Berman is a jerkface.

Reposting this Chris Sheridan article on Landry Fields:

http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nba/columns/story?columnist=sheridan_chris&id=5784479

Which includes this snippet:

On draft night, after the first 20 picks, team president Donnie Walsh asked each of the 10 members of the Knicks' scouting department to make a list of the 10 players they felt would be available at picks 30 through 40.

After the 30th pick, Walsh asked the employees for a new list: their top five picks, in order of preference. The votes were tallied, and Andy Rautins of Syracuse (whom New York chose 37th) was first, followed by Fields.

I thought that article was odd when I first read it. Rautins is a wild-card pick. You're just hoping he can play point someday as well as he played point-foward for 'cuse.

Stephenson would have been the hometown pick if they wanted to make one.

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

LOL. If you listen closely, you can hear people start to boo before the Fields pick is even announced. You got to love NY fans.
