So what does make a rivalry?

Playoff intensity?
Redundant matchups?
Geographic proximity?
Players engaging the fans?

Longstanding competition between two cities in every professional sport that existed long before jerkoffs like Paul "I never did a damn thing before Ainge got me KG & Allen to play with" Pierce was even born. How 'bout that.

To me a rivalry is a blatant dislike for one another. Boston-Knicks isn't a rivalry to me because Boston has won so much more than the Knicks. I don't even think Boston cares about the Knicks, might have been a riavalry in the 60s and early 70s but that is long gone. Heat-Knicks that is a Rivalry of the past also. As of now the Knicks really don't have any rivals. Because they have been so bad and the fact that the team has changed rosters. Bulls-KNicks same that was a rivalry because they use to fight tooth and nails that isn't much of a Rivalry now. Until you play vs a team in meaningful games and its a battle you go through and you do it for a number of years then it becomes a rivalry.

Its a rivalry when both sides really hate losing to the other squad. It becomes a notable rivalry when two teams keep meeting in the playoffs and it takes a real fight to advance.

I'd say some playoff history and some chippy play and hard fouls and good close games make it a rivalry.

When both sides have some perceived added value to beating the other side, it's a rivalry.

The heat/knicks rivarly started from Pat riley quiting on the knicks and taking the heat job just days later, then Zo and ewings match up, then LJ and Zo not liking each other at all, then the fights..and 4 staight playoff battles, plus we were in the same division and played the same style, the coaches..pupil vs teacher..

I think we had a small rivarly with the pacers, but that was only in the playoffs, they really did't have any umf to there regular season meetings...

The players now a days are all close freinds, they party, eat and drink together, shake hands and joke minutes before the tip off, shts a joke now...Even the Boston/LA finals didn't have any real venom, there just no real must see rivalry in sports over all.

Hard fouls, please...and risk getting suspended for your next must win game..you get a tech for just throwing your hands in the air for a BS call..imagine Gallo head button LBJ, he would probably be suspended 3 games and fined enough money to feed and houes a family of 4 for the year comfortably.

Then there's the dissparity in the NBA...take the knicks as an example...If we continue winning like we are, we will have gone from the celler to the penthouse in one season...like the nets did with kidd, like the celts did with KG and now the cavs...on the other end...

There's more teams under .500 in the NBA then there are over .500, thats why we have 4 or 5 teams winning so many game in a row.. How can the NBA produce any rivals with the way the officiate games ( they want you to run up to the refs slap him on the ass and tell them GOOD CALL, NICE JOB gimme another) and allow 3 of the top 10 players to play on the same team......Rivalry.....please, not in today's game

No, there are not more teams under .500. Last season there were 13 with losing records.

A rivalry is when you have heated beefs.

WE AIN'T NOWHERE WITH THIS BUM CHOKER IN CARMELO. GIVE ME STARKS'S 2-21 ANY DAY OVER THIS LACKLUSTER CLUSTEREFF.

I don't know. I guess no one hates each other. But you know, rivalries are more in the minds of the fans, not the players. The players, it's cash money either way, man. The fans, we get hyped and create the image of a rivalry in our brain, our brainzone.

That rivalry is Luke warm at best, they haven't even seen each other in the playoffs in almost 5 seasons..trust me I a big yankee fan..Love the packers too, and even the hated bears rivalry is suspect. Although that may heat up if the last game of this season depends on division winner/playoffs

that's kinda true - we've owned them lately. but w the way the sux beefed up their squad this offseason, the rivalry may be renewed this coming season. we shall see.
