Well, I'm not sure if Melo would make the Knicks a better regular season team THIS year - I do think that Carmelo is a better 1 on 5 scorer than anyone on the team except for Amare. That ability to draw fouls and manufacture points is what to me could set him apart as a playoff difference maker.
Assuming it would take either Chandler or Gallo to get him, how many points would he average on the Knicks with Amare pushing 30ppg nightly? Let's put it this way, with Amare in the alpha scorer role, do you necessarily need a #2 guy scorer averaging 20+ppg, or is having a bunch of 15+ppg guys around him a better approach? Right now Felton/Gallo/Chandler are deeply in the mix, as is Fields.
Right now we've got a nice 5-man game. We're different from those really good Detroit teams from the 2000's in that it's not all parity - we have a go-to guy.
This is a situation that we'll need to continue to monitor - but WHAT IF... we make it through dream week unbeaten - what will that say about our team model?
A few games ago, we were said to have had the 2nd easiest schedule from an opponent record standpoint (discounting, of course, the tremendous # of back-to-backs the Knicks have!). After 3 hard games against the Nuggets, Celtics, and Heat, would our schedule be more like 10th toughest the remainder of the way?
