This is why the knicks will finish the season near .500. It's easy for fans to believe we can win 50 or more games when you're playing Washington, Toronto, and Philadelphia.

It's a long season, and there's plenty of negative threads to go around.

that's a rough stretch for sure. the team just has to keep growing and learning together. hopefully by that point Anthony Randolph and Kelenna Azubuike are making contributions to the team. hopefully by that point Felton and Amar'e have the pick and roll worked out a little better.

Lots of folks said we'd be 1-4 after the first five games. We're 3-2. (thanks to some asbestos, I guess)

Just keep improving and we may still surprise some folks.

when the Knicks feel pain, I feel pain

(I know I just set myself up for some witty remark)

I hate to say it, but 8 or 9 wins during that 22-game stretch would be acceptable -- but we must clean up during the current stretch. We need to enter that killer stretch several games over .500 so we can still be around .500 when it's over in late January.

If we are at .500 after that stretch ends, I think -- or at least hope -- we will make the playoffs.

I don't think Knicks fan should look at the schedule past the next game. They can easily defeat a team like the Bulls and lose to a team like the Sixer in a span of a few days. There is not a game on the schedule that you can chalk up as a win or loss. We have a unpredictable team on our hands.

Good point. But I do think you can look at a significant stretch of games and decide what the expectations should be. I think in the current 20-game stretch we are in (which started with the Wizards game), we should be able to reasonably expect to win 12 or 13 games. Like you say, we'll probably win a game or two we would have expected to lose, and vice versa (Sixers game is a perfect example of losing a game we should have won), but overall -- based on how we have played so far -- it is reasoanle to expect the team to win 12 or 13 of those 20 games.

That said, I am personally not holding my breath on 12 or 13 wins, but I am hopeful that we can do it.

As for the 22-game stretch that follows ...

I'll be the first one to eat his words when they lose each of those games, but I cant help but feel optimistic about that line up. For the better teams that the Knicks have played so far (Boston, Portland, Chicago) they put up decent performances against each. Even though the team is only 3-3, they have yet to be blown out of a game yet. Perhaps not the best indicator of future success, but it does say something as compared to last year.

All things staying the way they are now and barring future injuries, I think they can at least compete through that part of the schedule and make a serious impression on the league that they are not the same old push over team any more.

I hope...
