Looks like we have our own lottery pick. It's hard to believe he's getting so many minutes and playing as well as he is. Right behind Derrick Favors, that is Melo interesting. Gordon Hayward, which Utah selected with our "traded" pick is 10th (and I wouldn't trade Fields for him.)

snippet on fields:

After an impressive showing in Las Vegas, I wondered if Fields would win over Mike D'Antoni with his hustle. Boy, did he. Fields has started all three of the Knicks' games, playing big minutes (29.7, third among rookies) and contributing with his all-around game. He's averaging 11 points and 7.3 rebounds, good for fourth and third among rookies.

Nice video I got from another forum, as well as the link above. Landry Fields Celtics highlights.

But, but... never plays any rookies and doesn't develop players.

Stereotyping, there's a reason I hate it.

Man there are STILL guys around the web that keep saying this stuff even as Mike has 2 rooks in his starting lineup! I hope Fields keeps proving people wrong and this team keeps on improving.

Hopefully he has changed. The stereotyping is based on an 8 year tenure as a head coach. The first three games this year have been a nice surprise in how he is setting his line up but they are only three games. Hopefully he is evolving and recognizing the need to change.

Well people formed an opinion based on how he treated ONE rookie in Hill, only one rookie.

He didn't play Douglas last year until Walsh traveled with the team last year on the March road trip when he said he was evaluating players and coaches.

D'antoni clearly said he doesn't play bad rookies.

Other than sounding a little insensitive, I have no problem with this approach. A rookie needs to sink or swim on his own and with help from trainers and assistant coaches (That's why teams have so many of them). Head Coaches who have jobs on the line, and veterans to keep happy don't have time to develop bad rookies in game situations.

I wonder how much patience D'antoni will have with AR.

Since we are being literal I will just post facts. Over the first 63 games before Walsh traveled with the team Douglas had 26 dnp's and averaged just under 9 minutes a game for the 37 games he got off the pine. He played a total of 324 minutes for 63 games. The March road trip started on 3/10. That game was the 64th of the season. From that game on Douglas played over 564 minutes and averaged just under 30 minutes a game. I know you follow the team and I can't imagine that you didn't question how Douglas was handled last year on a team that won only 29 games.

Walsh went on the trip to evaluate players and the coaching staff. D'Antoni was on the closest thing to a hot seat that he has been on with Walsh. I believe it was reported that he was considering having D'Antoni hire a defensive assistant. You can poo poo it but it happened and that was when Toney got minutes.

dude what is your point? Is this just to knock MDA? That he shouldnt get any credit for the emergence of Douglas that it was Walsh's doing?

I seem to recall Duhon playing so bad MDA just pulled the plug on him. They tried the spanish guy for a bit and he sucked. They tried Douglas for awhile and poof.. the guy is pretty good.

Developing players has nothing to do with minutes. Developing players is exactly what it is. Did the player get better? Regardless of how many minutes TD got, he has improved dramatically from his first summer league until today. David Lee developed dramatically. Gallo got better from year one to year 2. Wilson has steadily gotten better each year no matter what coach. Nate stagnated. He did not like Hill for whatever reason. We are steadily seeing Mozgov improve. Mozgov is starting. Fields is starting.

The point is, D'Antoni has not developed ever player we have(no one can), but it's ridiculous to say that we aren't developing our young guys. We've actually done a pretty solid guy. Considering our entire core has been young for the past two years, there aren't too many examples of guys that have not improved.

Same goes for teh defense. You'd be insane to argue that he is a defensive coach. You'd be insane to say that he can't improve in this area. But many people seem to suggest he's incompetent as a defensive coach and the numbers just don't match this statement. We were incompetent last year because we did not have one defensive player on the roster. We are improving defensively not because D'Antoni has magically learned. We are improved because we now have defensive players. Mozgov, Randolph, Wilson, Gallo, TD, Felton, Turiaf are all going to block shots, get steals and create havoc no matter who the coach is. David Lee is going to be jazz hands no matter who the coach is. Nate Robinson still goes under screens playing for the best defensive team in the league. All this talk is just nonsense.

I just hope that people will like me

People argue those points cuase thats the way it looks, thats what players say about MDA after they depart. MDA has made some adjustments in his philosophy base on his roster this season. You can't argue against these points when almost all of MDA's teams have led the league in 3's attemped and made, and the knicks were a horrible defensive team( although he didn't have the players) and frankly, the suns weren't that much better.

I personally thought TD and hill weren't ready, last season, and gallo was (who essentially played his rookie season last year) so i never agreed wih the " he doesn't play rookies" theory.

MDA has a rep of being an offensive guru, JVG has a rep of being a very good defensive coach, you are who you are until proven different.

I don't think this ladder is calling him a lotto pick. Fields is supposed to hit the ground running, he went to school for all four years. In 2-3 years or by the end of the season the story will certainly be different. Regardless, I love the pick by Donnie.
