Nike is second to NONE in marketing and PR... quite the impressive attempt. Still not all the way healed, but stuff like this will really help LeBron rebuild his image.

Still hate him tho!!!!

You should stop trying so hard to repair your image with these multi million dollar commercials. The only thing that will do that is winning.

Nike is using this as free publicity. No one really cares that he left Cleveland except Cleveland.

When Lebron is on ESPN highlights all will be forgotten. Just ask Kobe the sexual abuser.

It's not about CLE. It's about gaming the NBA and going to Miami.

NBA fans don't like seeing the script written in advance.

So we hate.

That is a GREAT commercial. I'm not going to stop hatin' on LeDouche (at least not this season) but I retain a grudging respect for him, especially when it comes to his advertising. He's the best at it (from a creative & performance standpoint) and that's something I can't deny.

Wish he cared about the hoops "legacy thing" a bit more, but this ad is a terrific start at a PR rebuild. Thanks for posting it.

Yeah umm.. LeBron didn't make the ad. Nike hired an ad agency to do it.

Why be a condescending douche? Did I SAY Lebron made the ad? That he wrote it, directed it, did the AVID editing and handled the media buy? Don't be a schmuck.

Lebron has always had way more input into the creative side of his advertising than a traditional star (I worked in the industry for a decade way back when). He also understands how to "perform" in front of the camera. It's not by accident that this commercial works. And it's not only due to the quality writing and art direction. It's due to his grasp of this visual communication form and his ability to use it to convey the message HE wants out there.

Yes, professional communicators helped him. Just like composers, arrangers, lyricists and producers "help" pop stars create amazing songs. But without a star to perform them, they would be worth nothing.

You posted you respect his advertising. OK. You say he is the best at it.

By "it" you probably mean self-promotion. What part of "The Decision" did you respect the most?

Which ad agency did LeBron hire to handle "The Decision"?

Papabear Says

What should he do? There is nothing he can do. He messed up. He will never get back to where he was. With him Wade and Bosh winning a championship, there will always be a asterik next to it. He blew it! Sure he has a right to go to any team he wants to but not the way he did it. He misled people and made a game and mockery of it.

From a technical aspect, the quality of that commercial is second-to-none. But here's the problem: he's playing the victim. He's putting the spotlight on the fan, asking us what we want him to be, setting it up like he's in a no-win situation and we are his tormentors.

No matter what he does we won't be happy because we're haters!

The rub? The only thing he's a victim of is an entirely self-inflicted wound.

Nice commercial. He basically blames everybody but himself. The only referrence he has that he is responsible is that he did it before. I guess back in HS.

It has been stated at length before. He is hated not because he left Cleveland. He is hated becasue of the manner that he went about doing it.

Condescension comes easily to you.

I certainly don't respect anything about "The Decision". It demonstrated a serious lack of understanding his own fan base and clearly was misguided. If what you mean to suggest is that one was all on Lebron, then point well-taken. Perhaps Lebron isn't as clever as I seemed to suggest.

Still, the new "Rise" commercial is a gem, regardless of your commentary directed at me. What I think he is saying is "WTF do you fans want from me? Should I try to live up to your normative model for me, or should I just get to the business of winning championships?"

I think he's saying that's what he's about, not any of the shyte we fans attributed to him. I don't think making an "Apology" commercial would be nearly as effective for him as this one will be.

Condescension? Shit... I'm a ****ing *******. Most had already realized this.

But i stand by my post that LeBron probably had nothing to do with the commercial.

If he had an ounce of that kind of creativity to beign with, he would've come up with a better idea for his future.

From AdAge (10-25-2010):

Does LeBron James really need to rehabilitate his image? Nike seems to think so, or at least it wants to make sure basketball-shoe-loving consumers haven't deserted the NBA star, who this summer famously (or infamously) deserted the Cleveland Cavaliers to take his talents to South Beach and play with fellow All-Stars Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosch.

Nike and its longtime agency Wieden & Kennedy have rolled out a new campaign, "Rise," that lets LeBron address "his off-season controversy head-on," as Nike said as it announced the effort.

This 90-second spot broke today on YouTube and will appear on TNT Tuesday as the NBA season kicks off with a game between the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics.

What the Stacy Wall-directed spot really does is let LeBron get a few jabs in at Charles Barkley, who during the off-season turned out to be one of LeBron's more vocal critics. (I wonder how Barkley's new round of T-Mobile commercials, which co-star Dwayne Wade, are going to work out?)

The spot asks, "What should I do?" It's meant to be rhetorical, though one answer could be "Not star in this self-serving spot." I commend Nike for sticking by one of its biggest brand ambassadors. And by trying to take a measure of control of the conversation, it's also making sure that one of the answers to the questions raised in the spot is "Just do it."

So maybe Nike hopes some of its brand equity will rub off on LeBron. But the last time Nike tried a stunt like this, with Tiger Woods, the effort didn't go over too well.

What do you think? Is Nike's "Rise" effort the wrong tack to take?

Doesn't mention Lebron's involvement in the creative, but I think he has to "ok" everything before the Creative Director signs off on the spot and sends it to a shoot. Anyway, he's a douchebag, but I really like the spot. He is basically telling all of us to "Go Phuck Ourselves", which takes some chutzpah. I still hope his new team goes down in flames.

i doubt that... he's got a whole team of people in charge of repping his image & promoting his brand, & they all report to him... he definitely has some say in how his image is going to be marketed.
