Better for us. His next year salary is not guaranteed.

So this is a good thing??

He is a keeper, IMO, and he costs very little- the "flexibility" we have given the amount he gets paid is quite minimal.

The guy is a keeper after 5 pre-season games? Yea ok.

The league isnt short on SF's.

Briggs makes a good point. Now after next year he won't be salary-controlled any longer unlike a 1st round selection which is under team control a lot longer. That seems to be the risk of selecting a guy in the 2nd round who actually turns out to be a player..Perhaps we should've went a step further with him and lengthened the contract by gauranteeing year 2 with team options for years 3 & 4, much like Indiana did with Lance Stephenson. Hey who knows, maybe we attempted just that (it would seem like a good investment based on this kid's ability & upside) but Fields turned it down in the hopes of getting payed real money a lot sooner a-la Wes Matthews..Probably not, we probably would've heard something if that was the case. Or would we?

Whatever the case, Fields needs to play. I'm convinced the more he plays in whatever capacity, the better off we'll be. Say if Fields turned down a longer offer in order to start getting payed real money a lot sooner, I would hope Mike wouldn't count that against him and sit him in order to keep the eventual cost down. That wouldn't be wise..Play the kid -- we can use him RIGHT NOW BADLY, and if he shows he deserves to get payed when the time comes, you pay him.

They are always "solid" guys available for cheap.

Wes Matthews was not matched by Utah when he signed with Portland -- BRIGGS has no idea what he's talking about.

We'd have his Early Bird rights after 2 seasons, which gives us the ability to sign him to the average salary. The "Gilbert Arenas" provision of the current CBA prevents a team from offering more than the "average salary" as a starting salary to a 2nd-round pick coming off a 2-yr rookie contract. So in that respect, we can match whatever offer he gets. We're not going to lose him unless we willingly let him go.

The only real concern is if he blows up. Cause then his cap hold will eat into our 2012 cap space which we need for Paul/Deron, etc.

Briggs, since ShamSports has Fields listed as having at least a 2 year deal, can you provide some link that explains why you think his deal is for 1yr?

According to Hahn, it's a two-year deal:
