Talent-wise, is this year's team better than the one Walsh inherited?

Excluding contracts and flexibility, does this roster have better talent than what we started with two years ago?
Before trading Crawford & Randolph on Nov 21, we were 6-5 with 's SSoL offense (which we havn't seen since).
Maybe it's not a fair comparison because the 08-09 team had played together for a full season. What do you think?
Yes, this team has more talent
Too early to tell
No, this team has less talent

I know we could use Zach randolph--maybe we can get him in free agency:) we need a player who can rebound so badly--its like we traded other problems for new one's

Craw, Randolph, Al, Nate, Lee...

We're not that far above that group from a talent standpoint. The hope is that it fits the system better and that they fit together better... and that they're better from a personality perspective.

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

I think the team was better in 08, that team came into to camp ready abd excited about the up incoming season. That team (had they stayed together and minus the steph mess) would have made the playoffs.

This team is equally excited and ready, but there are a sht load of ? we have no answers to yet, and the melo rumors won't help.

This team has less talent, but this team's best player is better than the '08 teams best player. Also, the pieces on this team fit better. That team in '08 was a result of Isaiah's starphuch experiment, which was a result of amassing talent without regard to fit, or personality. There was no clear leader on that '08 team and I never got the sense that they played as a team.

From the pre-season, this team plays better as a team, especially on their defensive rotations. I do not recall seeing that in the '08 team.

Rose is not the answer.

I've always felt we had a ton of talent but those teams were full of selfish, lazy and low BB IQ players. This team is more balanced and fits together better. This team has more defensive minded players but WAY less rebounding. The biggest thing is this team isn't capped out so even if it's less talented there are still options to improve the team.

The early 08-09 team was better. But this group has potential and is learning to play smarter. That group only played like 11 games anyway. They were 6-3 at one point.

The team Walsh inherited didn't know what defense was, this team actually plays defense. Or does that not come in to the discussion of "talent"? And most of those players were selfish one dimensional ball hogs, compared to young unselfish players we have now.

For the most part I agree. But, during those few games, I do remember seeing the ball moving on offense. I think we were averaging like 5 assists per game w/ Isiah, and being surprised what could do with the same team. I havn't watched much preseason, but went to the first Garden game, where STAT got 30pts, 0 assists. He had 1 assist against the Nets. I don't know if this is being selfish or just not having anyone decent to pass to.

STAT is the focal point of the offense and it is his job to take it to the hole and score. As long as he is getting results and shooting a high percentage I wouldn't worry about his assist numbers. If he start doing that when he is being double or tripled team and just can't make it then that is cause for concern.

The big difference between this team and the team of Z. Randolph, Craw, Lee, Duhon, Nate is that this team has more efficient scorers and defenders at every position. I think offensively, the team Walsh inherited could keep up and maybe even exceed this team, but this team should be a much better defensive squad if MDA actually coaches defense. That will be the big difference this year. Teams should be more hesitant to drive on us with the shot-blockers that we have now and with Felton and Douglas at the guard spots, we can shut some teams down. MDA just needs to make a commitment to coaching defense and stressing defense during the season.

Mike already made more of a commitment starting last year. He emphasized D in camp last year and now this year with better defensive players it already looks like this team is going to be a much improved team defensively. Once the rotation is set for a while and the players can develop a much tighter defensive chemistry, the D should be more effective.

We may not have more guys that can create their own shots like we once did, but there are more team oriented players. We really need our shooters to step up and hit more consistently tho. That's the only way the floor will stay spread for Amar'e and our other inside players to thrive.

Talent-wise, is this year's team better than the one Walsh inherited?
