I like this pairing in the backcourt, especially on defense. They both do a good job pressuring their man, and Felton's biggest defensive weakness (his inability to stay in front of quick PG's) is somewhat lessened by defending 2's. Both of them together wreak a lot of havoc on passing lanes, and that's exactly what we need in the final minutes of a game.

Obviously we can't start this lineup cause then we'd have no backup guard, but I think our closing lineup should be:

PG Felton (guarding SG's)
SG Douglas (guarding PG's)
SF one of Gallo or Chandler, whoever has brought it that game
PF Amare
C Randolph (or Turiaf if we're facing a team that runs their offense through their center like Lopez, etc.)

Mozgov still gets into foul trouble too often for me to be confident that he should close out games. As for Randolph, normally I wouldn't want someone with such low bball IQ closing out games, but I think by playing with the obvious alpha dog in Amare, and Felton controlling the offense, he's no longer the focal point and won't try to shoot over 2 defenders. We can keep him in solely for the energy he brings on the defensive end (blocking shots and securing rebounds), as well as the possible mismatch he might have against slow-footed opposing C's. For the few teams that actually have a go-to center like the Nets or Magic or Bucks, we may need Turiaf (or Mozgov if he cuts down on the fouls). But for the rest of the NBA, most teams hardly go to their center in crunch time, even if they have a size/strength mismatch over Randolph.

I like most of what you're saying, but the AR part seems a bit strange. He hasn't shown that he's ready for that kind of role yet. Turiaf or Moz seem best suited to go against opposing C's in the 4th. If Moz can stay out of foul trouble he should eventually grow into that kind of role.

I think he can be groomed for it though.

Most of Randolph's mental lapses came on the offensive end this preseason. Turnovers, overdribbling, bad cross-court passes, or shooting over 2 defenders. On defense, however, he provides weakside shot-blocking as well as defensive rebounding (excusing tonight's horrid 0 reb performance).

I think by playing with Felton/Amare in the closing minutes, he's not going to be relied on offense, and thus it'll limit his mistakes. But he'd be more useful than Turiaf, for example, on the occasions where we do get on the break with a Felton or Douglas steal. As for his size/strength mismatch at the 5, again...you're not going to see teams go to Kendrick Perkins or Joakim Noah to score in crunch time. For the teams that do have a legit offensive threat at C like Brook Lopez or Dwight Howard, then we can close out with Turiaf or Mozgov.

The other option is just to play Amare at C in the closing minutes, and give Chandler/Gallo both a look at SF/PF. Gallo's rebounding lately has given me hope he might actually be able to play the 4.

Simply put, it's important that we have strong defensive rebounding in crunch time, cause second-chance opportunities can be momentum killers after playing 20 seconds of solid defense. And since Turiaf is both a horrid rebounder and an offensive liability, I don't want to see him closing out games ever again (unless absolutely necessary). Mozgov hasn't really shown a nose for rebounding either and is also foul prone (another two negatives for crunch time).

i agree.

i think we'll probably see:

Felton
Toney
Wilson or Gallo (whoever is less sleepy that night)
Amare
Turiaf

to close out games.

i'd love for AR to earn a role in crunch time, but he has to earn it first. right now he hasn't.
