"I came back from Europe talking about all the good food, good wine and good women of Milan and Paris. I wish I could be talking about the good Knicks basketball."

- Marc Berman

Marc:

With all due respect, Mr Berman, you want respect as a sports journalist, you need to earn respect.

You wish you could be talking about "good Knicks basketball"?

Fine. Then define "good Knicks basketball" in incremental steps and monitor the progress like any other growth chart. Write about how "good Knicks basketball evolved from 1966 to 1969 with a gradual infusion of new parts that culminated with the Dave DeBusschere trade. You must know this ain't something you flip a switch on, no matter how many times the Knicks security staff has pissed you off. Get over it. You are supposed to be a professional and David Lee ain't walking through the locker room door.

Start over. Rinse yourself of Stephon Marbury and Isiah Thomas. Sure, we get the fact you have been around them too much and you are on a deadline, so are most people every day of the week. The difference? You have a dream job with free season tickets. Do as most passionate, analytical and hopeful fans have done and take a critical look at what is in front of you like any lead guard on a fast break. Write about what you see and not what you think you see through some lens you refuse to wipe clean. This is not politics. This is entertainment. Entertain us and make us laugh every once in a while. If I want bitterness I can watch sore losers like Glenn Beck or Sean Hannity.

Enough.

Write about what you see during, not after, practice. Write about the nuance of the skill sets and not individual preferences. Then talk about how the correct combination of players should be deployed. Write about the assistant coaches roles in focusing on position players. Do some investigative research and write about the college coaches. Has there been ONE article about a person who guided Landry Fields at Stanford that lends some preview of what to expect in the pros? Hell, Jim Boeheim is practically in the same area code. Give him a call about Andy Rautins. Talk to Shawne Williams about his past and present. Take a trip to Memphis and walk around his neighborhood. The barbecue is great at Interstate. Forget Rendezvous.

"My Russian sources say foul trouble will be a major issue for Mozgov in the NBA. During the exhibitions of the World Championships, he constantly was in foul trouble."

My Russian sources? Where? ... at the freakin' KGB? What "sources"? Show me a quote and name names like any journalist worth his salary would. hen write about what that "source" learned about watching Mozgov develop through the four years of Euro tutorial. What were his personal study habits that apply to developing in the NBA?

Do I need to come to New York and do your job FOR you?

Damn

Respectfully,

The Answer Man

A few of the NY writers are like bad tenured professors. They no longer have any incentive to do a great job. They don't push their creativity and strain every last ounce out of a story as they once did to get where they are. It's both sad and annoying. They no longer have to earn it everyday like most people.

This thing that we need 20 game together is a bunch of hogwash. You can gain continuity and added cohesion over time--but if you play hard and smart there is no reason why we should not be flying out of the gate. When you have a player starting @ C who is not good enough to be starting NBA games and your coach shows no discipline in letting his players take shots from any place on the court or the team is being physically overwhelmed on the boards---then you will have problems today and tomorrow. Pre-season is the time to get the kinks out.

How Many Fingers Am I Holding Up?

Briggs - are you on drugs, who said anything about 20 games together? (it will take more than 30)

Playing "hard"?

Every single NBA team is playing "hard" out of the "gate". Is there a comparative measure for "playing hard" that can be applied to one team over another a competitive situation? If so, then why isn't is a column in the scorebook? Walt Frazier never played "hard". During the pre game shoot around he relaxed on the bench. He played with the same stoic facial expression every night. He never glared at an opponent or beat his chest after a steal. Clyde never played hard. He was too cool for that.

"Flying out of the gate"? Did you say "flying"?

What the f#ck do any of those hackneyed cliches mean in plain English?

And what does any of that have to do with the piss poor quality of sports journalism in New York?

sheesh

Stop reading Berman....write to the editor not directly to Berman. There are dudes that would kill for his job and would do an outstanding job...I for one would love to get paid for something I do for fun anyway. Shame on Berman and shame on anyone still hanging on his every word like there's no such thing as the internet

I really like Larry Brooks a lot, but I'm probably the only one here that reads the hockey sections daily. I can't think of one name that pops out, but the Star Ledger typically does a good job with their coverage--just not as much volume as the NY papers.

I used to like Hahn a lot now, but because of who pays his paycheck, he's lost some of his bite

The NY POST = maximize the negative, minimize the positve, more drama, less feel good stories.
Every single sports writer for the NY post, no matter what team they cover, will focus on the negative..

Mosgov is a foul prone player, felton looked like crap, we got out rebound by a large margin, gallo shoots to many three's.

I thought the same thing about his "Russian Sources".

And as far as him calling any of the college coaches, chances are they wouldn't take his call or give him the time of day.

You don't have to like Berman, but he speaks the truth here.

Forget the small sample and ponder...

1. We are going to have problems all year with rebounding (We are going to miss David Lee)
2. We are going to suffer through malik-rose type offense from Turiaf
3. We are going to suffer through the good and the bad with ARandolph
4. D'antoni needs to show up and put his rep on the line with his coaching acumen.

NO MORE EXCUSES should be every Knick fan mantra.

You may not like the messenger, and you may not like the prognosis, but try to refute any of that.

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

I don't have a problem with what Berman wrote. He spoke the truths and it just happens to hurt some. As Kam77 noted it is very difficult to refute any of the claims made by Berman. Asides from Amare we have a team full of question marks. Even Amare can be tossed into the category of question mark because he is without Nash.

I only feel comfortable with three players on the Knicks as of now. Amare, Chandler and Douglas.

Comment on his article:

Why do you write these stupid negative "sky is falling" articles, you fat slob? You do this all the time and it proves you've never played sports in your life. 10 new faces on a team is not an excuse. It's a fact and a legitimate one at that. The team needs to get accustomed to eachother. STFU and stop making a big deal out of PRACTICE GAMES. This is what the preseason is. PRACTICE. Isiah's Knicks used to have a winning record in the preseason. Where did that lead us?

Do yourself a favor and go have another White Castle burger you obese @sshole because you know nothing about basketball. F you and F this garbage paper you write for you hack.

the roster is completely turned over and you, Kam and Berman have just stated the obvious.... that there are questions about the roster and what each can do. Awesome stuff.

When Randolph and Gallo took 14 3's--the only person that is on is the coach. I was scared that would introduce the 3 ball to randolph and change what he s good at. Why the heck do you want Randolph and Gallo 26 feet from the basket??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
These people who say just 1 game--yes one game tht had some very bad fundematal problems--rebounding shot selection spacing problems disciplined play. Same sht as the last two years--enough to make u stand up and say WTF not again. The coach is on the clock--no timeouts here--put the line up you want--dont worry about guys who are not here--we haev good players--just make sure they play the right way.
