I've seen this before and I can never see the freaking cat going counterclockwise, altho I know he/she/it does. I dislike cats; I'm really a dog lover.

Is it really difficult for people to tell or am I being fooled? To me, he's clearly going from North to West to South to East, hence counter clock.

counterclockwise...

uh... but then it switched to clockwise, wtf.

Ahh, I think I figured it out, but it's tough to make it switch, mentally.

[Note: each of the above lines were a few minutes apart.]

Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Yeah, your mind can make it switch directions.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

My natural tendency is to see it spinning clockwise. I have to look away, picture it spinning counter, then look back.

Holy crap....I just woke up; looked at this and now it is spinning counter-clockwise and I can't make it go back to clockwise. Is this animation programmed to change direction?

Need to change my vote to both. It just changed to clock-wise.

sweet optical illusion. i've managed to master seeing it spin both ways. it was hard at first. but if you are having trouble, try this:

when you want it to change rotation, look away from the screen but keep the cat in your peripheral vision. it will sit there in the corner of your eye appearing blurry. if it was originally spinning clockwise, chances are, it will continue to appear to do so while sitting in your peripheral vision. however, if you continue to stare away from the image and only view it in the corner of your eye, you can see it switch and then when you look back it should be spinning the opposite the way you originally saw it. if you are still having trouble, try focusing on the tail (while you are still looking away). not sure how this works, but it's cool.

believe it or not, i don't even see the cat as spinning anymore. i see it as swaying back and forth 180 degrees in each direction.

I feel like the fat guy in Mall Rats who is trying to get the Magic Eye to work... I can only see it going counterclockwise

Both, depending on how you look at the cat.

can you explain that better because no matter how I look at the cat, it goes counterclockwise... and that i can't make it do both is driving me nuts

It's hard to make it switch (I don't really have it down; works sometimes, not others). But, basically if you look off to the right and up or down so you can barely see the cat in your peripherals, sometimes it will change. The reason why this illusion works is that there are no shadows, so a cat starting with its legs pointing left and moving to the back and then to the right looks the same as the cat starting with its legs pointing left, moving to the front and then to the right. There's no visual difference, only your mind filling it in, I guess.
