(bootleg POD Alert)

If you’ve read Knicks Vision in the past couple of weeks, you should know by now that I’m huge on Timo Mozgov.

I recently read on Twitter that someone thought Mozgov’s contribution was redundant to the team because of Amar’e. Now at first glance, I could see how this might be the case. But if you really analyze the Russian’s role on the Knicks, it is clear that he could be an essential player for Coach D’Antoni. That’s right, I said essential. Here’s why:

You can never have too many bodies in the paint

Is any team going to be able to match-up with the Knicks effectively? If you were to have Mozgov, Randolph, Gallo, and Amar’e in the lineup at one point in the game, the Knicks could out-size any team on the boards. They can finally run the half court pick and roll with two pickers at the same time. If Amar’e gets the ball from Felton, he runs it into the paint and, let’s say, he misses the layup. Mozgov will be right there to put it back in. If it’s a long(er) miss, Gallinari or Randolph will be there to restart the offense.

Gets up the court quickly

From what we’ve seen in the World Championships, Mozgov can run, and he can do it well. No knock on Stoudemire, but Moz is obviously skilled at getting to the basket quickly. There is no doubt that his quickness will be an important asset in the third quarter.

This man brings depth

As true fans we would never admit and pray against it, but deep down, you know someone is going to get hurt on this team. It always happens. It happens in every sport for practically almost every team. If a big man with a big impact is plagued by injury (Randolph, Amar’e, Turiaf fall into that category), someone is going to need to step up. That guy? The Russian Cat.

The Knicks will get excitement out of him

Although he only plans on playing fifteen-twenty minutes a game, that doesn’t mean he won’t make an impact on the crowd. He loves to throw the basketball down and dunk somebody. He averages one block per game in the World Championships. This guy will get MSG pumped and thus may have a tremendous effect on the team as well.

Mozgov will play a bigger factor for the Knickerbockers this season than you may think. And don’t be surprised if late in the year, the team needs this guy for his grit to survive.

He's like a Rocky/Drago hybrid and how can you not be getting excited over this guys potential? Dude is active, tough and is gonna bring some great energy off the bench. If he throws down a couple dunks, blocks a shot or two, knocks a few dudes on their ***e$ and gets the energy in the building up, he's gonna be a real great impact on the squad THIS season. Great find...
"It was good," Curry said. "I killed Malik, Jerome. The usual suspects. It felt good."

I hope Timofey has a long, great career in NY. However, I think you need to be based in reality when you talk about him. The Knicks had a lottery pick big man last year and he had an amazing number of dnp's coach's decision last year before being traded.
D'Antoni has said good things about Timofey but I believe he also compared Hill to Amare and then didn't play him on a 29 win team instead choosing to go with has beens on expiring contracts. The transition to the league, the country, and the coach that doesn't play rookies or a traditional center doom Timofey to the bench. I think he will be lucky to get the 10-15 minutes he is campaining for.

Mozgov watch: Final appearance (Russia vs. Argentina)
by Osborn on Sep 10, 2010 3:48 PM EDT 18 comments

I did not get to see the whole game, but I did watch from about three minutes into the third quarter all the way up until Timo fouled out with 3:31 left to go in the game. It was a relatively close game (that is not even over yet, although it definitely looks like Argentina is going to pull this one out) and Mozgov most certainly left his fingerprint.

Some notes:

- Timo notched 11 rebounds before finally fouling out, many of which came in the third and fourth quarters. If I counted correctly, he combined for 7 rebounds in the second half, two of which were offensive.

- He looked great on the pick and roll again, which everyone should probably get used to. He ran his usual high sock/high screen energy game and got a couple of baskets on the pick and roll.

Any big in the rotation will have an impact... but he's a bench player that needs to develop his explosion if he's to grow into a larger role

If Timofey Mozgov is Robin Lopez, we make the Playoffs.

He's a legit 7 footer, all he needs to do is be around the rim, this guy is good for 15mins, 8pts,5-7rebs, and 3 GOOD HARD FOULS

I believe Mosgov could be essential if and when the Knicks are ready to make a legit run in the playoffs and not a one and done appearance, which looks like the best case scenario at this point in time. I'm stoked that we are starting to find potential diamonds in the rough like AR and Mosgov. I just hope D'Antoni gives them both a fair chance to succeed.

8 and 6 in 15 is wishful thinking

but I do agree with the caps, and that he will produce something of meaning in 15 minutes

Hmm, it seems there has been yet another Mosgov game today- I didn't see it (and wasn't expcting it) but it was Russia Vs Slovenia, and Russia won 83 to 78- apparantly Mosgov won the game for them, coming back in after foul trouble when they were down by double digits, and leading them to the win with lots of clutch free throws- he scored 19 points on 4/5 shooting, 10/11 free throws (and a lot of those were at the end), 3 rebounds and 1 block in 26 mins:

He seems to have gotten better and better througout these games- it seems a long time ago I was looking at Pavvy's highlight vids of Mosgov in the friendly games before the tournament, and whincing at his two handed block technique!

This is why it was such a good scouting job by Donnie's crew. This time they went into the year vowing not to mess up like last year and miss a potential star over there. They hid this move very well also. Some here complained that Donnie always tipped his hand, well not this time, cuz NONE of the other teams were up on this guy to the extent it seems we were. Now it seems like they committed to the right guy. Who knows, maybe he's the reason they felt safe in letting Hill go. Clearly they've been watching him for a while and had to have some kind of talks with his people. Who knows. I'm just glad that they got him.

"He was No. 1 on my list for European free agents," the executive said. "His upside is unbelievable. He's bouncy. He needs to get stronger, learn the NBA game and terminology. It's a no-brainer. The way you got to look at him is they drafted him a couple of years ago, held him over there and now they bring him back."

Upside translates to how quickly a player learns.

The best part about Mozgov is that he has responded to a higher level of competition in the FIBA games.

He goes against the 6'10 Turiaf in practice. The Knicks would be wise to import another experienced seven footer to stretch his stamina, just for practice matchups.
