Anthony, Nuggets look ready to part ways

By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports
2 hours, 18 minutes ago

Carmelo Anthony(notes) wants out of Denver, and World Wide Wes delivered that message to the Nuggets with all the delicacy of a jackhammer at Sunday morning services. Do yourself a favor and trade him, the agent told the organization weeks ago.

Carmelo Anthony has made it clear to the Nuggets he wants a change of scenery.

Denver was furnished with a short list of teams and told to get to work. Yes, this how William Wesley and Leon Rose of CAA work now, thick with threats and ultimatums and a swagger suggesting that the sport belongs to them. After Anthony told owner-in-waiting Josh Kroenke that he still wanted out of Denver during a Sunday meeting, the Nuggets appear done trying to sell their All-Star forward on a contract extension.

This wasn’t a productive, nor particularly pleasant, meeting and multiple sources said it could turn out to be the point of no return for Anthony and the organization. Sources insist it’s no longer a matter of if the Nuggets trade Anthony, but when, where and for whom he’s traded for.

“It’s almost a given they’re going to move him,” said a front-office executive who’s talked with the Nuggets and Anthony’s agents with CAA.

Between the agents’ bullying and Anthony’s dismissive disposition in Sunday’s meeting, sources said Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke, Josh’s father, finally made a stand with CAA.

Keep it up, and the Nuggets will never do a deal for one of your clients again.

Try to dictate terms of a trade and we won’t move him.

Keep up the heavy-handedness and you’ll get a war.

Kroenke has decided to deal with CAA in a way most of the league is too fearful to try. Leon Rose, the agent who works with Wesley, backed down, sources said, and is willing to be more open-minded on potential trade destinations. Anthony wants to leave Denver and get his three-year, $65 million contract extension now. This partnership is rounding third and rapidly reaching disrepair. Denver is willing to trade Anthony, J.R. Smith(notes) and Kenyon Martin(notes), and start over again, sources said.

The Nuggets made it clear to teams they want young players and draft picks for Anthony, league executives said. The New Jersey Nets and Los Angeles Clippers have emerged as the two most probable destinations for Anthony because they have assets that appeal to Denver. The geography works for Anthony because of his wife LaLa Vazquez’s entertainment career.

Golden State and Houston are contenders, too. What’s more, the Charlotte Bobcats are a sleeper because of Anthony’s Brand Jordan shoe deal and the team’s ability to give the Nuggets a salary-dump proposal.

Back in mid-July, the Kroenkes had to travel to New York for Anthony’s wedding to finally realize he no longer intended to sign their extension offer. The reception spiraled into an evening of Chris Paul(notes) and Anthony’s brother making toasts about a future partnership for Anthony and Paul in New York with the Knicks. With nothing to trade for Anthony, though, New York isn’t considered a strong contender in the eyes of Denver management.

Few can be as strong-minded and willful as Stan Kroenke, and it doesn’t matter the Nuggets will be turned over to his son Josh by the end of the year. Stan still will be lording over the franchise, and the billionaire has shown an old-school ability to carry through on his convictions once you’ve lost him as an ally.

With the way that CAA has tried to muscle and manipulate the market this summer, a source said Stan Kroenke, freshly approved as the St. Louis Rams owner, feels further emboldened in the NBA’s collective bargaining talks to push for a “franchise player” tag that teams could slap on superstars like the one the NFL uses. NBA owners are still far from seriously discussing that issue, but CAA’s manipulation of Anthony and Paul while under contract has become an increasingly sore subject within the league.

For now, the departure of Denver general manager Mark Warkentien and the increased influence of Kroenke advisor Bret Bearup means there won’t be much of a fight within the organization to stay the course with Anthony, sources said. Denver has hired Masai Ujiri as its new GM, but he doesn’t arrive with the authority to make major moves. Things have deteriorated too fast and grown too nasty to believe Denver will turn back now. ‘Melo is on the market, and the bidding has begun

Here we go--see ya Gallo and Randolph. I guarnatee we will not be the club we couldve been --that's signing up with no cap space for 47 wins and 2nd round IF no one gets hurt. Our frontline would go from good to moderate and we could lose to special players ATLEAST

I didn't think agents could regain the power they previously had with the cap set up the way it is. This summer changed everything in terms of free agency and agent power. CAA seems to have more juice than David Falk in his prime.

The Knicks have a ton of young talent. We have resources. Just add a third team to get a pick or two.

I want Melo but not at the price of Gallo. I hate to say it but Gallo is a deal breaker for me. I am probably wrong about it but...that is the way I feel.

If Melo wants the Knicks, he will not accept any trades and will just opt out after the season. He doesn't owe them anything. Why go to NY with a somewhat gutted roster unless it was absolutely essential. Melo is still completely in the driver's seat. **BLEEP** the Kroenke's. Man's gotta do his thang.

For the all the overblown and ridiculous hype our young players get around here, I find it kind of weird that Denver has no interest in any of them. LOL

Anyway, I'd offer Denver whatever they wanted for Carmelo Anthony. We NEED to build our Big 3 to counter Miami. We'll worry about filling out the roster later on, which is actually easy. The priority should be to build that Big 3.

I knew it...I talked about this about a week ago in one of the other Melo threads -- if the cat wasn't out of the bag then, it's certainly out of the bag now -- The dude wants out of Denver..The writing's obviously been on the wall for a couple of weeks now..How could he possibly go back there now after this??? There's no way.. It all depends how much Melo wants NY now..He could easily tell his agent he wants the Knicks and instruct him to get something done, limiting the Nuggets options in the process. The big question is, is he willing to go that far?? Issue Denver that type of ultimatum?? Who knows..I don't think nobody knows that right now except him..Now like I said, no guarantees -- Melo may feel some pressure himself to get out of Denver and go whereever now -- Orlando, NJ (soon to be Brooklyn), Houston, Portland, etc. those are all possible destinations IF HE'S INTERESTED IN SIGNING THERE LONG-TERM..But he's not going back to the Nuggets now -- the relationship is fractured now just like I suspected it already was over a week ago..I expect something to get done quickly now.. If I'm Donnie I'm definitely interested but only up to a point...If it were up to me I stick to the original good faith offer of Gallo, Chandler, a future 1 and Curry's expiring contract. That's it..Maybe I could be open to sweetening the pot with a 2nd rounder or two, the rights to Jerome Jordan possibly, but that's about it...Not interested in dealing Randolph in the same deal with Gallo to get him (not interested in dealing Fields either to be honest--I know what I saw this summer and to me that kid's a keeper)..That's too much and doesn't make any sense -- I agree with some of you there. But I also feel like we need to be involved in the conversation. Makes no sense not to be. The man's too good a player to not be involved at all..It's all about competing with the Heat now and leveling the playing field. Melo definitely helps in that regard. No question about it...Gallo, as promising a young player as he is WILL NEVER be the player Carmelo Anthony is--imho anyway, Chandler's a nice young component but completely replaceable and if we ever included a future 1 I'm confident we'll be a good enough team (esp. with Melo) to the point where we'll be able to go out and purchase a replacement pick just as good if not better in 2014. Gallo, Chandler, future 1/Curry is a fair deal just as long as Walsh doesn't get too crazy here and offer up the whole team -- and I'm confident he won't..The Knicks obviously like Randolph a lot -- Alan Hahn and whoever else can say whatever they want about "assets," but to me the Knicks view AR as a keeper and a major building block, as do I. I get a feeling he's off the table...Walsh is playing it well right now and this latest revelation outta Denver tells me Melo still has the upper hand -- if he remains steadfast and refuses to sign a long-term extension with just anybody, we're still in good shape..But now say Donnie refused to offer anything like some of you believe, I think that would turn Melo off to the point where he'd tell his agent, alright F the Knicks then, go get plan B done, now I'm willing to go anywhere. Point here is -- HE WILL NOT JUST WAIT OUT THE SEASON TO SIGN WITH THE KNICKS IN THE OFF-SEASON. That's not an option. That was never happening, esp. now with what has transpired..Interesting situation right now.. I really believe it's all completely up to Melo -- if he and his wife want NY he should tell his agent to put pressure on the new Nuggets GM to get something done with the Knicks and only the Knicks. That right there would tell Denver how serious Melo was and it would effectively take all of these other teams right out of the equation..We have a pretty good offer on the table and as far as I can tell, we were the first one's to even make an offer, maybe the only one's at this point..That's good..Melo's obviously discussed this already with Amar'e, probably at great length..Hopefully something major works out right for us for a change..

Gallo/Chandler/a future 1/Curry's expiring -- that's A TREMENDOUS deal for the Knicks my friends, I'm sorry for anyone who doesn't think so. But if it took another major component such as Randolph, now I'm not as interested..If that's the case then I just assume move on with what we have. Hopefully someone close to the Knicks will be able to convey that very sentiment to Melo w/o tampering, if he doesn't realize that fact himself -- hey, they can't deal the entire roster to bring you there big guy...Walsh needs to draw a line in the sand with Denver and stick to it..

Agreed. Fair trade for both teams considering the circumstances. And nobody will miss or care or remember Danilo Gallinari and Wilson Chandler when we're winning 50 games with Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire.

I don't know if anyone caught this from a recent Hahn post, but Curry has a $5M trade kicker. Yes, $5M. Isiah at his negotiating best.

So, on top of the $11M salary he "earns" throw in an extra $5M that would count towards the exchanged salaries.

basically, if you want Melo back alone, Curry's $17 + whatever have to be around $21M. I think.

I'm guessing they want someone who can put up numbers close to what Melo was doing as well as some talent to develop. We are just offering the latter. I don't know who they believe they can get, haven't read about any serious offers from other teams. Not saying there haven't been any. GMs know that the Nuggets have to make a deal, they are just waiting for them to drop their asking price.

Does the trade kicker get automatically exercised or is it up to Curry to decide if he wants to invoke it? Don't know how this stuff works..
