Still not decided whether or not I like the move. I think I would've been more in favor of him staying here with us in some capacity, either as the 15th man on the roster traveling with the team and learning the ropes or playing heavy minutes in the DL under our tutelage.
Pros
- If he signs this 1-yr deal with Serbia we won't have to pay him, he doesn't count against the cap and we keep the roster spot open.
- We managed to retain his rights.
Cons
- We'll have no control over his playing time - meanwhile if he played in Reno, I'm willing to bet we would've had full control over all aspects of his development-- Reno is the Knicks D-League affilate after all. Players drafted or acquired by the big club (rather than the typical walk-on D-league FAs) will most likely be given special attention as they should. Hopefully this Serbian coach will play him enough mins. where he's able to get some benefit from going there though there are no guarantees..That coach has a team to run and ball games to win -- developing Jordan for us may not be a top priority for him. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a Brandon Jennings European situation -- Jennings got limited/sporadic PT while in Europe for his 1 year there and was generally unhappy--he barely played from what I remember and his overall numbers were underwhelming and his production suffered. You hear this kid Jennings talk about Europe now, he chalks up the whole experience as a complete waste of time.
- It would've been much easier to monitor his progress if he stayed State-side.
- Suppose Mozgov and/or Turiaf ever went down, God-forbid at the same time. Calling up Jordan from Reno will not be an option now -- now all of a sudden we'll be scrambling for a big-man replacement instead of one being just a phone call away.
Fields finally was signed today and that makes 14. So who takes that 15th spot? If it winds up going to Mo Ager then that means we're in more trouble at 2-guard than we initially thought..It better be someone who makes more sense than Jordan because Jordan makes a lot of sense taking that spot starting out his career as either a Knick or a Reno Bighorn.
